The Effect of Music While You Work

Abstract

I wanted to investigate whether or not music affects the way you work. So to see what was true and what was not I had my family members be my test subjects. I predicted that music would help a person work easier and faster than without it. My hypothesis is supported by many articles such as Liquidplanner.com. It states “ A variety of studies have proven that music helps make repetitive tasks easier. And while the beat might help you to get into what you are doing it also improves your mood, and being happy increases efficiency and productivity.”

Each test subject completed a wordsearch the first time without music. Then, time him/her to see how long they took to finish the word search. I used that same word search for the second test but since it was the same I waited a few days after they did the first one to do it again that way my subjects could not memorize where the words were. Finally, repeat the second and third step again but with music I made a playlist out of different varieties of music. Such as Heavy metal, Rock, Hip Hop, R&B, Trap, and Kpop. After you are done testing put all of the data into a graph which will show if music really does affect the way you work.

The data showed that out of five people for two the music effect there concentration to work and the others were faster with music. For one subject it took her 1:23:28 to finish her wordsearch with music and 1:27:43 without music. Also, for another subject it took him 22 minutes without music and 19:49 minutes with music. As you can see it was a close call to see if music really does affect your concentration.

What I learned from this experiment is that if I wanted to concentrate on important work, I just need to drown out all of the other noises with music which will help me concentrate more. The results of my studies has proven that my hypothesis was correct. It was correct because out of all my subject more worked faster with music than without it. I believe my experiment was accurate and gave me the best answer. But if I wanted to improve my experiment I could of tested my subjects with harder work to solve.

Procedure

1. Choose a test subject

2. Her/Him will solve Multiple math problems including a word search without music playing

3. Time her/him to see how long it took her/him to solve the problem

4. Then I will give them the same math problems and a word search but this time I will play a music list of Pop music.

5. Time her/him to see how long it took her/him to solve the problem

6. After that is done I will test each person about three times

7. Graph my data and he is music really affects your concentration

Hypothesis

For my Hypothesis I predicted that music would help a person work easier and faster than without it.

Problem

Does music help a person work faster and concentrate more than without music?

Conclusion

Overall, the experiment went smoothly but took quite a while to finish. My hypothesis was correct because I predicted that the music would help the person work faster a concentrate more on what they are doing at that moment. I learned that music contributes to the way you work 100%. it is different for different people some think that it distracts them from working other feel that it help them get into the mood of there work and concentrate that way they can finish faster.
