Dissolving M&M's

Question: Which Liquid will dissolve a M&M the fastest?

Hypothesis: I believe that soda will win because of all the acids in it.

Procedure:

Step 1). Gather materials

Step 2). Put a orange M&M in the selected liquid

Step 3). Time it until orange coating is off

Step 4). Repeat 3 times

Step). Do this for the other liquids

Conclusion: After doing my Project I found out that my hypothesis was wrong. I predicted that soda would win because of all the acids in soda and what they can do to people's Teeth. I thought that water would come in last because there are no acids to help deteriorate the colorful coating on the M&M. Water was my first place winner, followed by Pepsi, and in last place was Gatorade. The average time for water in seconds was 189.3. The average time for Pepsi in seconds was 246.3. Finally the average time in seconds for Gatorade was 365.3.

Abstract: Dissolving Tablets

For my Project I decided to test which liquids would dissolve a tablet the fastest. I choose to use M&M’s. The liquids I used were Pepsi, water and Gatorade. My hypothesis is that Pepsi will dissolve the M&M the fastest because of what soda can do to people's teeth. I choose this topic because I wanted to see what liquids can actually do to people's teeth and how they affect them.

The way I tested my project was first I gathered all my material, M&Ms and the different liquids. Then I would test each liquid with the same color M&M. I used an orange M&M. To test my experiment I would place one M&M in the liquid I chose and I watched the M&M until the colorful coating was fully off the M&M. I did this 3 times for the three different liquids. I repeated this for every M&M.

The first liquid I tested was Yellow Gatorade the first test time was 6 min. and 3 sec. the second test was 6 min 5 sec. the last test the time was 6 min. 8 sec. The average time The second liquid I tested was water the first time for that was 3 min 10 sec. the second time for that was 3 min 7 sec. and finally the last time was 3 min 11 sec. The final liquid I tested was Pepsi the first test time was 4 min 6 sec. the second test time was 4 min 8 sec and the final test was 4 min 5 sec. The water has won because it took the least amount of time to dissolve the colorful coating.

My hypothesis was wrong I stated that soda would win because of all the chemicals but it was water that won. I believe that my project was accurate every liquid had a fair chance and M&M variable was controlled.
