Candle Burn Rate

Problem:

What I am trying to figure out is do unscented candles burn faster than scented candles.I wanted to do this experiment because I really liked the question, and I thought it would be very interesting to do.

Hypothesis:

My hypothesis was that unscented candles would burn faster than scented candles because for instance, if I got a black scented candle the black would trap the heat and the candle would burn very slow.

Procedure:

1. Buy five white candles

2. Buy five scented candles

3. Measure the height of the white candles

4. Light the candles near a table with no wind

5. Write down the height and the time in one hour

6. Then light the five scented, and colored candles and time them for one hour

7. Repeat the steps five more times

Conclusion:

My data is related to my question because I was trying to figure out do unscented candles burn faster than scented candles. My data did not agree with my hypothesis because I said that white candles would burn faster, but actually the scented candles burn faster in an hour. I think my experiment was accurate because the experiment was in a room with no open windows, or fans on. I could improve my experiment by getting taller candles, getting different shape candles. Also, if I burned the candles for a longer period of time, or a shorter period of time.

Abstract:

I was trying to figure out if unscented candles burn faster than scented candles. My hypothesis was that non scented candles would burn faster because for instance, if I got a black scented candle the black would trap the heat in so it would burn very slow.

I bought five scented and five unscented candles. I measured the height of each candle before lighting the candles. Then I wrote the height of the candles down. Then I set a timer for an hour and I did one non scented candle and one scented candle. Then half way I checked how the candles were going. When the timer stopped then measured the candles height after the one hour. Then I would repeat this steps four more times.

After an hour both candles almost fully melted. The scented candles which are 1 inch long burned down to the base after only 47 minutes. The unscented candles which were 1 1/8th long burned down 1/4th an inch after one hour. All candles burned in a room with no open windows, or fans.

I learned that scented candles burn faster than unscented candles. My hypothesis was wrong because I said that unscented candles would burn faster than scented candles because if I got a black scented candle the black would trap the heat, and the candle would burn very slow. I think my experiment is accurate because the experiment was in a room that had no open windows, and no fans. I can improve my experiment by using taller candles, different shape of candles. I could also have burned the candles for a longer period of time, or a shorter period of time.
