Growing Gummy Bears

Abstract

I wanted to investigate which liquid Milk, Diet Coke, Water, Lemonade, and Orange Juice would make the gummy bear the biggest. In the beginning I assumed that the Diet Coke was going to make the gummy the biggest because of the chemicals in it. When I started researching the project I found a websites that said when they did this test Diet Coke was by far the biggest bear. I chose this project because I was very interested in seeing how big the gummies would grow. Another reason why I chose this project because I knew it was a popular project that students often pick to do.

For my experiment I first measured the gummy bear before I put it into the liquid. Next I got all of my liquids needed. Then I got 5 bowls and poured ½ cup of the drinks into each bowl. After that I had my mom and brother help me put the gummy bears in at the same exact time. I let the 5 gummy bears sit for exactly 24 hours. I got plastic bags and duct tape to label them so i wouldn´t get mixed up. I took all of the gummy bears carefully out of the bowls so they wouldn't fall apart. I let them sit out for just 30 mins. After the 30 mins was up I immediately put them in the fridge long enough for them to get stiff enough for me to measure them.

The data showed that 2 out of the three tests i did the water gummy bear got the biggest. For orange juice the average was 2.7 cm. The average for Diet Coke was 3.7 cm. The average for Lemonade was 3.0 cm. Milks average was 2.8 cm.

From this project I learned that water can make the most impact on a gummy bear. In this project the increase in size for water was 3.5 cm. My hypothesis was incorrect because I thought that the diet coke

Conclusion

I've come to the conclusion that my hypothesis was incorrect. I thought that the Diet coke gummy was going to get the biggest. The water gummy was bigger by 2.7 cm (180%). Overall this experiment went well. There was no problems with all three tests. From this project I learned that gummy bears do get bigger when they sit in water for 24 hours.

Procedure

    • First I got the gummy bears and liquids required for the tests

    • Then I got 5 bowls and filled them each with one cup of either diet coke, water, lemonade, orange juice, and milk.

    • Next I let them sit for 24 hours

    • Then I took the bears out of the bowls and carefully put them into plastic bags

    • I let them sit in the fridge for 30 mins

    • Lastly I just measured all of them separately

Problem

I chose this experiment because gummy bears are my favorite candy. In this experiment I was trying to figure out which gummy bear gets the biggest when it sits in either water, Diet Coke, Milk, Lemonade, and Orange juice for 24 hours.

Hypothesis

My hypothesis was incorrect because I thought that the Diet Coke gummy bear was going to get the biggest but it didn’t. I thought that the diet coke gummy was going to get the biggest because based on my research most of the websites had said that when they did the experiment it was that gummy that got the biggest.
