What String/Thread Is The Strongest?

Question: What string/thread is the strongest?

Hypothesis: I believe that Fishing Line will be the strongest because fish weigh a lot and sometimes up to sixty pounds so Im looking forward to see if any other strings can beat it. I will use fishing line twine, Sewing thread, and toilet aper.

Procedure:

1). Tie the string to a bucket

2). Carefully place 16 oz. and 8 oz. water bottles into the bucket until it snaps

3). Test again for more accurate results

4). Replace the string with other thread and string

5). Repeat

Abstract

Which String is the Strongest

What I did for science fair was test the strength of strings. I tested twine, fishing line, crossed linked toilet paper, and sewing thread. I did this project because my mother enjoys making arts and crafts and she uses some of these strings. I wanted to see which one was the strongest one in case she needed to know. I believe that fishing liner will be the strongest because a lot of fish sometimes weigh a high amount.

What I did to tackle this experiment was I tied the string to the handle of a bucket. Then I lifted it to see if it could handle the weight of the bucket which was about a pound. If the string could handle the weight of the bucket, then one by one I would put in sixteen oz or eight fl oz water bottles. When the string broke I added up the weight in the bucket. All tests were repeated for more accurate data. Surprisingly we got the same results for each test.

For the fishing line it broke at thirty pounds, this was kind of expected because it is fishing line. Next I tested twine and it broke at 26.35 pounds, or 406.6 oz. After that I tested toilet paper. My dad and I crossed linked it to strengthen the paper. This surprisingly broke at 16.562LBS I originally thought that it would break a lot earlier. Lastly I tested sewing thread. It broke when i lifted it without any water bottles in it so it broke at 1lbs I had to add a pound to every test because the bucket i used weighed about a pound.

My hypothesis states that the fishing liner would be the strongest. I was correct but I will admit the twine surprised me because twine looks all ripped up because it has threads sticking out of it. This made me think it was going to break a lot earlier than it did. If i were to make this project any better I would have tested more strings like stronger thread etc.

Conclusion

I predicted that the fishing line would be the strongest because of how much fish are able to weigh. When I started to test the fishing line I didn't think it was going to break at all but it did. Then I thought that the twine was going to hold more weight than the fishing line but, I was right because my data shows that the fishing line broke at 31 Lbs. and all the others broke under thirty pounds. Although I was surprised on how well the crossed linked toilet paper, did I originally thought it wouldn’t last at all. If I were to improve my project I would have used different strings, And more thought to be tougher ones. I wanted to stick with household remedies because if I were ti use stronger strings it would have to be rope and not that many people use rope for inside the house.
