6 which fabric dries the quickest

Question

The question was which fabric would dry the quickest. The fabrics were Polyester, Cotton, Nylon, Rayon, Silk, and Linen.

Hypothesis

My hypothesis was that Polyester would dry the quickest because most of my swim clothes were polyester.

Procedure

In order to start, I needed 6 types of fabric; nylon, rayon, linen, silk, polyester, and cotton. Next, I had to soak them with 50 ml of water and wait for them to dry on a table, under the light. After that, I would have to record each time it dried and average it altogether when done.

Abstract

Which Type of Fabric Dries the quickest?

By Rayane Cherifi

Since I have different types of fabric shirts, shorts, and pants, sometimes whenever they are wet they take a long time to dry. What I wanted to find out was how fast 6 different types of fabrics dry. My hypothesis was that polyester would dry the quickest. In order to confirm that, I needed the materials to do it.

In order to start, I needed 6 types of fabric; nylon, rayon, linen, silk, polyester, and cotton. Next, I had to soak them with 50 ml of water and wait for them to dry on a table, under the light. After that, I would have to record each time it dried and average it altogether when done. I had to do 300 tests total; 50 for each fabric. I would have known it was completely dry by feeling them with dry hands.

I decided to do the project at home. I tested each fabric 50 times in 17 days, meaning 3 tests each day, with the last day having 2 tests. After every test I would average every number that goes with each fabric. The average time for Polyester was 2 hours, 17 minutes. The average time for Cotton was 2 hours and 28 minutes. The average time for silk was 3 hours and 46 minutes. The average time for Linen was 4 hours and 33 minutes. The average time for Rayon was 5 hours and 22 minutes. The average time for Nylon was 6 hours and 38 minutes. The rankings from lowest to highest was polyester, cotton, silk, linen, rayon, and nylon. Nylon took the longest to dry, whereas polyester took the shortest to dry.

In conclusion, there was a change of differences in the fabrics (between polyester and cotton, there was an 11 minute difference, whereas between rayon and nylon there was a 1 hour and 16 minute difference). When drying each fabric, polyester dried the fastest; even faster than cotton. My hypothesis was correct. Now I know that when I go swimming, I will make sure that my swimming clothes are 100% polyester. One thing I could do better is add more variables and do more than 300 tests.
