8 The Affects of Saltwater on Plants

Dylan Bartley

Abstract

My project is about the effect that salt water has on plants. I chose this idea because I was looking on Mr. Fritz's website and it seemed liked the most interesting project. I hypothesized the plants subjected to salt water would die or show negative effects.

First, I went out and bought 6 plants: three for freshwater and three for saltwater. Then I went out and bought 2 spray bottles to water the plants: one for freshwater and 1one for saltwater. The reason I bought multiple plants instead of just one for each is because of variables. There are multiple variables that can affect the plants such as sudden death. Finally, all I needed to do was water them daily. I only used two sprinkles of salt from the salt that I had in my kitchen.

Both the fresh and saltwater plants are almost all dead. This could be a result of multiple variables as I said before. For instance, dorm of the plants were near death when I bought them. This was a problem I wasn't able to fix since the store was low on that kind of plant. And the plants that they did have weren’t the healthiest plants either, as some of them were nearing death or were already pretty much dead.

In conclusion, my hypothesis was somewhat correct. If I evaluate only the best standing plants from the fresh and saltwater plants, I was correct. However I would say that it was mostly inconclusive since most of the plants died. To improve this experiment, I could've obtained healthier plants.
