Incredible Growing Gummy Bears

Question: What liquid will make the gummy bear the biggest? Will color effect the growth?

Hypothesis: I thought that the sprite will grow the biggest because of the carbonation. I did not think the color will effect the growth.

Procedure:

    1. Gather materials

    2. Measure the original, size of the gummy bear

    3. put one in water

    4. Put one in salt water

    5. put one in vinegar

    6. Put one in sprite

    7. Put ÂĽ cup of each liquid in a cup

    8. Observe then measure size of bear

    9. Look and measure after 2,8,24,48 hours

    10. Repeat experiment

Conclusion: I learned that the bears absorbed much of all the liquids but the salt water. All the liquids made the bears get bigger while the salt water got smaller. My hypothesis was wrong because I thought that the sprite would get the biggest because of the carbonation but the water was the biggest. The water was at an average growth of 24.67%, the salt water had an average growth of 1.25%, the vinegar had an average growth of 22.83%, and the sprite had an average growth of 15.13%.

Abstract:

Incredible Growing Gummy Bear

In my project I wanted to find out which liquid would make the gummy bear the biggest and will color affect the growth. For the experiment I used water, salt water, vinegar, and sprite. I thought that the sprite would make the gummy bear the biggest because of the carbonation.. I thought the carbonation would make the bear spread and become big.. I also used green and red gummy bears to see if the color would make a difference.. I did not think that the color would make a difference.. I choose this project because I heard of friends doing it and I wanted to see what would happen..

The first thing that I did for my experiment was to get all the supplies I needed. I needed clear plastic cups, gummy bears, water, salt, vinegar, and sprite.. After gathering the supplies I put a green gummy bear in a ÂĽ cup of each liquid. Then I put a red gummy bear in a ÂĽ cup of each liquid. Then I monitored and recorded the changes in 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours. .Each time I measured them I measured in millimeters the length, width and height.. Lastly I repeated these steps for a second time to make sure the experiment was accurate..

During this experiment I measured the gummy bears in 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours,. Each time I measured them in millimeters.. The water soaked gummy bear grew the biggest. It changed an average of 24.67%. All of the other ones were lower than this. Doing the different colors did not make a difference because I did the test twice and each time different colors were higher. So the color did not affect it.

In conclusion I learned that the bears absorbed much of all the liquids but the salt water. My hypothesis was wrong because I thought that the sprite would make it the biggest but the water made it the biggest. However, I was also right because I thought that there would not be much of a difference between the colors and there was not that much of a difference. This experiment is accurate because it was done twice with similar results.. It could be better if I used more than the 4 liquids.
