Rube Goldberg Machine

Hypothesis

I think that I could make a Rube Goldberg machine in five steps or less.

Procedure

    1. I add a part, then test it.

    2. I will put another component on, then test it.

    3. I will repeat steps 1&2 until I have completed my project.

    4. I will record a successful run.

Conclusion

My Rube Goldberg machine worked and I met all of the criteria, that I wanted to meet.

Design

To build my machine, I collected sA Rube Goldberg Machine

ome household items such as push pins, yarn, and toilet paper and paper towel rolls. I painted the paper towel and toilet paper rolls, then cut them in half to make a track for the marble to roll down. Then I went to the craft store and bought styrofoam to make the tracks out of. I then hot glues everything together and tested it until I got the flaws in the machine fixed and everything went smoothly.

Abstract

Every year when it comes time to pick our Science Fair projects, I always pick something that has to do with scientific research, so this year I decided to an engineering project. I made a Rube Goldberg machine that can put toothpaste on a toothbrush. I planned to have at most five steps, and I expected it to put toothpaste on a toothbrush, without any mess ups and, or failures.

For my experiment I first had to see what materials I had around the house, because a Rube Goldberg machine uses materials that one already had, so I found some materials but I had to go buy some things. Then I cut the styrofoam to the desire size and shape. Put them together with toothpicks, and then put them on my board. I then had to test it and make adjustments so the marble would roll smoothly and the dominoes would fall perfectly in line. Then the pulley had a few mess ups, but after a few adjustments and a lot of hot glue, I got it t work. First, the dominoes fall which makes a domino fall into a cup that is connected to the pulley, that makes it fall. The other cup on the other side of the pulley goes up and knocks a ball over that rolls down a track which hits more dominoes. Then the dominoes hit a heavy marble, that falls on the toothpaste tube, that squirts a little bit of toothpaste on the toothbrush.

When I tested my machine it ran smoothly, I just had to make a couple adjustments, and then it worked. I just had to tweak the angles a little bit and it worked. In my project I practiced with energy changes, since we already learned them in science class. In my project the energy changes go from potential energy to kinetic energy, then it will go from kinetic to gravitational potential energy, then gravitational potential energy to kinetic. After that is, kinetic to gravitational potential energy, the gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy. I think that my project could have been more complicated, if I was able to have a bigger board for it but, i just got the largest size they sell in the stores. I could have improved my project if I by putting more or less filler beads in the pulley to even the weight a little better.
