Melting Ice Cream

Problem: Does a certain kind of icecream change how fast it felts?

Hypothesis: I think the vanilla gelato will last the longest out of the freezer without melting because the texture of it seems softer than the others. Since the texture is softer it doesn’t need such a cold climate to stay solid, whereas the hard ice cream does.

Procedure:

1. I will get five different kinds of ice cream. The kinds of ice cream that I will test are regular vanilla, low fat vanilla, sugar free vanilla, vanilla gelato, and vanilla frozen yogurt.

2. I will get ceramic bowls, an ice cream scoop, a piece of paper and pencil for

recording data, and a container of ice cream.

3. I will take out one type of vanilla ice cream from the freezer and put one even scoop of it in a bowl at room

temperature.

4. I will put the bowl of ice cream in the microwave.

5. I will microwave the ice cream at 5 second intervals until it is completely melted in the bowl.

5. I will record the time when the ice cream completely melts on my paper.

6. I will repeat steps 3 - 6 with the other 4 types of ice cream.

7. I will continue the same steps by doing the experiment two more times with each type of ice cream.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the data showed that Homemade Vanilla/Original Recipe ice cream melts the fastest. The average time that it took this ice cream to melt was an average of 22 seconds. My hypothesis was not correct because I predicted that the Madagascar Vanilla Gelato will last the longest out of the freezer without melting because the texture of it seemed softer than the others. Since the texture was softer I thought it didn’t need such a cold climate to stay solid. My results are accurate because I kept the ice cream in the same area of the freezer and used the same measuring tool each time. To improve this experiment I could make sure that the ice cream is on the shelf in the freezer and not on top or bottom of another ice cream container. Overall, my experiment was a success because I found out which one will last the longest out of the freezer.
