1 Organic and Haribo Gummy Bears in Liquids

Question:

Do Organic or Haribo Gummy Bears Grow Larger in Different Liquids?

Hypothesis:

I believe that water will expand the gummy bears most and that the salt water will grow it the least the gummy bears most. I think the Haribo gummy bears will grow more than the organic ones.

Procedure:

    • Get all of my materials (vinegar, salt, water, gummy bears, bowls, etc.)

    • Measure the gummy bears

    • Fill bowls and put liquid and gummy bears into them

    • Check on them the next 2 days

    • Take gummy bears out

  • Measure

Abstract:

I decided to do my science fair project on whether organic or Haribo gummy bears increase in size more in different liquids. I wanted to do this project on gummy bears because I thought it would be very interesting to see how the gummy bears reacted during the experiment.I believed that water will expand the gummy bears most and that the salt water will grow it the least the gummy bears most. I think the haribo gummy bears will grow more than the organic ones. I think the salt water will grow it the least because salt does not expand. I also believe water will become the biggest because

I started my experiment by going to the store to get my ingredients. I needed to get at least four cups of vinegar, Epsom salt, organic gummy bears, and Haribo gummy bears. The rest of the materials were household items such as water at room temperature, plastic bowls, ruler, and an optional device to take pictures to see the growth in the gummy bears. I labeled the bowls i was going to be using. They were labeled vinegar organic, salt water organic, water organic, vinegar Haribo, salt water Haribo, and water Haribo. I then added three tablespoons of salt to two cups of water in a pot on the stove to boil the water and then cooled it until it was room temperature. I put one cup of vinegar into each of the bowls that said vinegar on them. I spread the two cups of salt liquid into the bowls with the labels saltwater. I also did the same thing for water. Then I placed an organic gummy bear in all of the bowls that said organic. I put Haribo gummy bears into the bowls that were named Haribo. I marked down in a notebook what time I put them in. This is important so you know how long they have been in the liquid. I waited 2 days to see the growth but everyday at 7:00 AM I check to see the gummy bears and measure them. When they were finished I took them out of the bowls and measure to see how much they have enlarged. Then I did all of my data to finish off my experiment.

The gummy bears started at being one inch long and 0.5 inches wide. After the first day most increased by ¼ inches but the gummy bears in water increased ½ of an inch. This happened the next day also. They all lost their color. The organic gummy bears expanded most in the water. The Haribo gummy bears also responded most to the water. The organic gummy bears did not grow much in the vinegar. There were bubbles formed around both organic and Haribo gummy bears in the vinegar. The salt water took the color out of the gummy bears. The organic gummy bear in the vinegar ended up at 2 inches long and ⅔ inches wide. The Salt water was the same length but ½ inch wide. The organic water was 2.5 inches long and 1 inch wide. The Haribo bears in the vinegar were 2 inches long also, and they were ½ inch wide. The bears in the salt water were 2 inches long and ½ inch wide too. The water was 2.5 inches long but ¾ inches wide.

My hypothesis was that the gummy bears in the water will grow the most which was correct but i predicted that the salt water would make them grow the least. I was incorrect. The gummy bears in the vinegar grew the least. I also said that Haribo would grow more and that was right. During this project I learned that different foods and types of foods react differently to different liquids. I believe this is accurate because I did all of my steps with caution and I made sure everything was what it was supposed to be. Organic gummy bears and Haribo gummy bears react very differently to different liquids. I could improve my experiment by taking more pictures and observing the gummy bears more. This could help me see a bigger difference.

Conclusion:

My hypothesis was correct and incorrect. I know this because I predicted that the gummy bears in the water expanded the most and the gummy bears in the salt water expanded the least. I also said the Haribo gummy bears will expand more than the Organic ones but the Organic grew more. My experiment was accurate because I put a Haribo gummy bear and an Organic gummy bear in each liquid. Also I kept all of the gummy bears in the liquids for 2 days. I could have left the gummy bears in the liquids for longer than 2 days. I also could have taken pictures on my experiment. Overall I think my project was accurate and worked out pretty well.
