FAN Forest Hills Minutes November 2013

Brant Williams LO Redevelopment Director presented to the group. He described his organization and their activities. His group oversees both of the city redevelopment districts. They are also working on the sale of the West End Building. Brant described some of the major projects planned for the East End district affecting FAN. These projects include:

    1. North Anchor project (old proposed library location) – working on parcel acquisition east to Highway 43. City will own these properties and will manage the project. No set plans for the use(s) for this area which could include housing, retail, public meeting rooms, public parking, etc. Property acquisition is expected to extend into 2014.

    2. Safeway Block – Safeway has talked with the city over the years to find out what plans the city has and any code changes, etc. Safeway leases the lot and has just renewed for a long term.

    3. Trolley Station Project – Designed several years ago. This would be the area where the trolley ticket booth is located and this project would address that area.

    4. Kiosk in Millennium Plaza to project info Raton about events, businesses, etc.

    5. Improve sidewalk on State Street south of Lake View Village by RR tracks.

Brant advised that he expects that the LORA board will be seeking more public input (including the neighborhood associations) to help determine the direction for the development of the North Anchor Project.

Tree Removal Study

Martin Monto distributed copies of his Tree Removal Study to the group. Study supports premise that large fir trees are being removed to facilitate new construction. Martin agrees that FAN should continue with our “Save the Big Trees” Project, so called in the LO Review article. Jim Bolland recommended that this study be presented to the Natural Resources Advisory Board and the Sustainability Advisory Board. It was moved and seconded and passed to continue with the Save the Big Trees effort and submit the application for a Heritage Tree Grove designation on the old water tower site on Sunningdale to keep the site an open space.
