This 72' waterfall is easily one of the best in Lassen Volcanic National Park. It exists at the confluence of East Sulphur Creek and Bumpass Creek, where each creek contributes its own drop to the top of the waterfall before the creeks converge and fall the remaining height as East Sulphur Creek. The colors surrounding the waterfall are fantastic. It seems strange that it is named "Mill Creek" Falls because Mill Creek does not begin until the West and East Sulphur Creeks converge downstream. To me, Sulphur Falls would be a more appropriate name not only for the creek but also in reference to the vivid colors surrounding this waterfall. You can either stop at the viewing platform ~1.6 miles from the parking lot or keep walking and cross over each creek on footbridges. When we arrived at the viewing platform there was a deer who was munching on some vegetation near the base. Later it bedded-down and posed for some pictures. The hike to the falls is spectacular in spring with the Mule's Ear- & Arrowleaf Balsamroot-covered hillside (mostly Balsamroot) between the Sulphur creeks blooming. I don't think we've ever seen so many Arrowleaf Balsamroots blooming in one place. However, even though it is only ~3.2 miles round-trip to this waterfall, it has ~900' of elevation gain/loss with lots of ups and downs. Overall, it is definitely worth the effort.Location
