One of the best and most unique waterfalls in the state of California, Burney falls is not only made up of the water in Burney Creek but also of water from many springs that burst forth from the cliff alongside the creek and further downstream. Water easily infiltrates the porous soil upstream of the falls to sustain the large aquifer that gives life to the many springs that contribute to the uniqueness of this 114' tall and 250' wide waterfall. Located within McArthur-Burney Memorial State Park, there is an entrance fee to see the falls located near Lake Britton ($8 in 2011). Although there is a nice viewpoint near the parking lot, we highly recommend walking the short and steep trail down to the base of the falls not only for the photo opportunities but to appreciate the scale of this waterfall and all of the springs that contribute to it (look for the springs coming from western side of the creek, downstream of the main section). Anyone in the area of Lassen Volcanic National Park or Mt Shasta should take the extra hour's drive to see this waterfall. Any Californian should at some point in their life see this waterfall.Location

Directions

To get to the parking area, take CA-89 north from the intersection with CA-299 ~5.8 miles and turn left into the state park. Drive to the fee station and then proceed to the parking area on the left. There is a viewpoint above the falls to the NE or you can hike down to the base of the falls via two routes; (1) takes you S of the falls to a bridge where you cross over to the W side of the creek and proceed N and then down in elevation. Once you are passed the falls to the N you recross the creek again and head S to the base, or (2) there is a much shorter (but less scenic) path that switchbacks down from near the upper viewpoint.
