This is a collection of at least eleven beautiful steps along Cataract Creek as it makes its way down from Mt Tamalpais' western flank to Alpine Lake. Cataract Creek is surrounded by beautiful Redwoods and vibrant green colors. The first four steps are basically one continuous waterfall (or at the most two). The fifth and sixth are located a little ways upstream of the footbridge. The seventh and eighth steps could be considered one waterfall and are located near the end of the trail after a gentler section of the trail. The ninth and tenth steps are located just downstream of the last step and are small. The eleventh step, during higher flows, crashes down and around a large rock (see waterfallswest.com's picture). My first four waterfalls are the same as Leon Turnbull's (waterfallswest.com). His fifth is just downstream of the footbridge and his sixth is my fifth. His seventh is my seventh, his eighth is my tenth, and his ninth is my eleventh. Our locations differ slightly, but I had a GPS unit with me for this hike, so I believe that my coordinates are fairly accurate (I think he accidentally mislabeled the numbers on his map). There are a few ticks here, so be aware.Location

Directions

From Fairfax, take Bolinas Road southwest for ~8.2 miles to the trailhead for Laurel Dell (at the sharp curve just after crossing over the dam at Alpine Lake. There is limited parking here off the side of the road. The trail follows the southern arm of Alpine Lake and then parallels the creek. The first waterfall is found ~1/4 mile from the trailhead (East Fork Cataract Creek Falls can be heard and barely seen ~0.1 miles before the first waterfall). The last waterfall is reached ~1.2 miles from the trailhead (~900' in elevation gain).
