Bridestowe 2nd XI v Chelston II Saturday 23rd June 2012

Post date: Jun 24, 2012 12:55:06 PM

After a two week lay off due to bad weather, the seconds were looking forward to this match, especially as we had a good mix of youth and experience in the team. Once again though rain threatened, so we knew that a quick result was needed.

Winning the toss, the skipper put the opposition into bat and things went well until the middle of the innings, when their number five arrived at the crease. We quickly discovered that Chelston did not have a first team game, and that this Australian import (to his self-confessed embarrassment) was very much out of place.

He proceeded to score 118 runs and then take three wickets, which basically ruined the game. Our bowlers persevered, but all suffered during the 20 over onslaught. Chasing 222, we put up a good performance, with Matt J, Simon T and Charlie E all scoring runs. The clouds gathered and the rain began, giving us the right to walk off; however the game had been played in good spirit throughout and we therefore decided to soldier on, eventually losing just before the rain set in for good.

This was a disappointing afternoon because normally we would have been two evenly matched teams who would have enjoyed a really close game. Unfortunately we do not play Chelston again so we cannot enjoy the satisfaction of seeing how they shape up without ‘Mr Australia’ in the ranks.
