BCC Presentation Evening

Post date: Oct 6, 2017 3:25:45 PM

The annual presentation evening took place on 4th November at the White Hart in Bridestowe. A fine spread of food put on by Mike and Sarah set up for a great evening celebrating the successful season.

Both teams thoroughly enjoyed their cricket this year and finished 3rd in their respective leagues. Here is a run down of all the awards handed out on the night, as well as notable stats and moments of the year.

Moment of the Season 2017 - Jointly voted as Gary and Lavis Partnership and Phil and Jack hundreds.

1XI Moments

  • Gary's first DCL hundred(s). Despite leading the Bridestowe batting for a number of seasons, before this season Gary had never scored a league hundred. This year, like London buses, two came along at once as Gary first tonned up at home against Stoke Gabriel (152) and followed it with another at Plymouth CS&R (101) on a day no one else other than Ryan (32) enjoyed much with the bat. Both were fantastic knocks which brought a tear to Clifford's eye!
  • Gary and Lavis huge partnership against Stoke. This was a home fixture which no one enjoyed much last year, as the visitors Stoke piled on 329 for 9 while we could only muster 165 for 8 in reply. This year was almost an exact reverse as we posted 319 for 5 and bowled Stoke out for 193. This was mostly thanks to a monster 231 partnership between Gary (152) and Lavis (76no) who smashed Stoke to all parts of Millaton.
  • Doing the double over Babbacombe. We have never fared well against Babbacombe. They are an 'experienced' side with plenty of overseas talent and former premier players. Despite being in the same league for a number of years, the last time we managed to beat them was back in 2015. This year was a different story however as we put in two fantastic performances to beat the twice (and were the only side to beat them at all this year!). Highlights included 49 for Lavis and 34 and 4-37 for Gary in the away fixture and 18no and 4-39 for Dan and a stunning catch by James to remove the dangerous Andy Kingdon in the home match.
  • Dan saving the day. Captain Dan's position in the batting order has been a hot topic this year with several eyebrows raised as one of our most talented players often came in at 8 or 9. Coming in number eight with the score at 85-7 at home to Shaldon he smashed 47 with Tom McGrattan and Tom Boother sticking around well to get BCC to 162. This proved plenty as we bowled Shaldon out for 66. He repeated this the very next week at Dartington and Totnes, we did a little better to get to 106-8, but a quickfire 34no from Dan got us to 173ao, this time with Jopling and Boother doing the supporting work. Again this was enough as we bowled D&T out for 147.
  • Ian on the attack at Shaldon. The final game of the season at Shaldon was a bit of an anti-climax. We had already secured 3rd in the league and although we had an outside chance of going second, this meant little with only top placed Babbacombe being promoted. Rugby had started and so we traveled with much of the second team (credit to them for still getting a eleven players out and winning!). Ryan and James (both 21) put on 47 for the first wicket, but a five wicket haul for their overseas left us reeling at 82-5. This didn't stop Ian playing his shots, and he smashed a number of boundaries off their overseas, including an almost impossible six over third man. He second top scored with 25 after Dan (32) but BCC could only manage 162ao. It wasn't our day in the field as unusually our lines were all over the place and a number of catches went down. It was not the end of the world though as it kept Shaldon in C West next year who were a good laugh despite some heated moments (Mark and James!).

2XI Moments

  • Phil and Jack Father and Son Hundreds. The 2s had an embarrassment of riches for their home game against D&T 3s. It therefore wasn't a huge surprise that they managed BCC's highest ever DCL total, 360-7 from 45 overs. The main contributions were hundreds for father and son Phil and Jack Hatton who smashed the bowling to all parts. Jack was finally out on 129 from 90 balls whilst Phil elected to retire on 101 from 73 balls.
  • Anthony Jutson double wicket maiden. With a number of BCC regulars unavailable towards the end of the season, it gave us a chance to give some youth players a go. As well as 2s regular Jack Shaw, Will Shaw and Anthony Jutson also had a couple of games. All of them held their own in senior cricket and are great prospects for the future. The standout was a double wicket maiden from Anthony in his first over of his first senior game!
  • Neilo's hundreds. Nielo did some serious damage with the bat this year, if he made it to double figures, he went big! He made a match winning 101 against Hatherleigh 3s and followed that up with a brutal 124 against Cornwood 4s.
  • Dave Jopling hatrick. Along with son Alex, Dave Joppers had a solid season with the ball. The highlight was a hatrick against local rivals Whitchurch. He bowled their captain Webber for 18, Ian then stumped Ord first ball, and Dave did the rest by bowling Hall.
  • Lee saving the day. In the 2s away game to Cornwood they got off to a shocking start chasing 160 to win. At 49 for 7 BCC looked down and out, but up stepped skipper Lee Jutson. LJ batting with Jack Shaw with his stoic defence managed to shuffle the score to 68 for the 8th wicket. When Jack fell Kev Yates joined the skip and managed to move the score to 104 before Kev was out with plenty still to get. Miraculously LJ (73*) and Bomber (29*) brought home for an outstanding win.
  • Brandon hundred. I think its fair to say Dino enjoyed his one game in the 2s this year. After a few lean weeks in the 1s he was asked to go and get some runs in the 2s and he certainly did that. Chelston were the unfortunate victims as Dino hit 127 runs in rather quick time to take BCC over 300, and well out of reach.
  • Tim hundred. Tim wasn't quite the lone hand with the bat for the 2s as he has been in previous years, with some other good contributions elsewhere. But he did still top the runs and average by a decent margin and lead the batting well from the top. His highest score was 105no from 108 balls against C&K chasing only 157 to win! He was by far the main contributor in an opening stand which took BCC almost all the way there, with Stevo falling for 30 from 70 balls as he decided to let Tim do most of the scoring.

Hundreds (9): Gary Sizmur (152 vs SG 1XI, 101 vs PCS&R 1XI), Neil Griffiths (124 vs Cornwood 4XI, 101 vs Hatherleigh 3XI), Jack Hatton (132 vs D&T 2XI), Brandon Horn (127 vs C&KK 2XI), Rhys Palmyer (120 vs Buckland T20), Tim Shaw (105no vs C&KK 2XI), Phil Hatton (101no vs D&T 2XI)

Best bowling figures: Alex Jopling (5-30 vs Liskeard T20, 4-43 vs Babbacombe 1XI), Dan Fogerty (4-10 vs SG, 4-39 vs Babbacombe 1XI), Tim Shaw (4-30 vs Whitchurch 2XI), Gary Sizmur (4-37 vs Babbacombe 1XI)

Here's to a great 2018 season!!
