Bridestowe 2nd XI v Abbotskerswell III Saturday 30th June 2012

Post date: Jul 2, 2012 9:04:57 PM

The seconds were on the road again for the last game of soggy June. We arrived at a sunny Stover School where we found new changing rooms, a decent artificial strip and a good outfield.

Our optimism was further reinforced by skipper Charlie E winning the toss and putting Abbotskerswell in to bat. Following our ignominous defeat by this team three weeks ago, we were desperate to redeem ourselves and put in a good performance. The skipper was worried about our bowling being a bit on the thin side, and therefore decided to open the innings with part time bowler Matt J at one end, complemented by the experience of Darren H at the other. It came as a bit of surprise when Matt made the first breakthrough with only his second ball, which bowled the opener all ends up. Darren didn’t hang about either, claiming three quick wickets with the help of some sharp keeping by Smokey.

Abbotskerswell then decided to make a game of it by developing a long middle order partnership, ably abetted by woeful Briddy fielding which included at least six dropped catches! The innings eventually came to a close following four wickets taken by the Jopling family, and another by Darren, whose final figures were an impressive 4 for 32 off 11.2 overs.

Chasing 142, we made a sound start with brothers Matt and Alex J scoring 30 and 24 respectively. Charlie then weighed in with a quick 19 and Pat saw us home with a solid score of 27 not out. Anchoring the innings throughout was Trevor T who, following Charlie’s instructions to the letter, scored 9 runs in 25 overs!

This was a good result for the seconds; we made amends for a poor performance against Abbotskerswell earlier in the season and, apart from the fielding, put in solid displays with both bat and ball.
