Week 18 - Fri 3rd May

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 3rd May 2024....and it's the slightly late May Day edition...over to...

Philip -

"Just back from a holiday in the Isle of Man. Never been before, but I would recommend it for scenery and historic interest even though it's a bit of a rigmarole going by ferry (3.5 hour crossing and customs checks beforehand on the way out, but not on the way back).

Meanwhile, something else has got me feeing quite chipper. I wonder if you can guess what it is. Any clues in this week's selections? Quite possibly."

Hey Baby by Bruce Channel - ("Delbert McClinton on harp I believe").

Magic by Pilot - "Love the double-necked guitar."

Sweet Caroline performed by The Bands of HM Royal Marines -

"May The 4th be with you."

Jackie -

"A special re-issue celebrating the 40th anniversary of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell album has recently come out. So here's 3 favourites..."

"Keep well all."

"Here are my selections for this week from my Swift/Lipa/Eilish-free dinosaur preservation and appreciation zone.

Yet another spate of losses of some great musicians including Mike Pinder (Moody Blues), Richard Tandy (ELO) and Duane Eddy. Best wishes to all you RPMers."

Shazam by Duane Eddy - "Farewell to Duane - thanks for all the instrumental hits."

Wild West Hero by ELO - "Richard Tandy on keyboards."

Tuesday Afternoon by Moody Blues - "Mike Pinder keyboards - responsible for bringing Justin Hayward into the group. He also

promoted and developed the Mellotron and was influential in it being used by John Lennon on Strawberry Fields Forever."

Kevin -

"Bonjour mes amis. Just back from a flying visit to la belle France, but enjoyed some great music on the road."

Flash Company by Ben Nicholls and Martin Simpson - "Confess I don't know Ben Nicholls, but I'm glad Spotify's algorithm suggested his recently released Duets album. I love Martin Simpson's music (his guitar playing more than his voice) and the two together put me in mind of the alchemy between John Martyn and Danny Thompson. "

("Ben has become the go-to bass player for the folk world. He was in Seth Lakeman's band last year at Folk in a Field. He also plays in Sam Sweeney's band. I think the Duets album is Ben calling in a lot a favours from his folky mates." Tim.)

The Outdoor Type by The Lemonheads - "Folk music is replete with tales of swains wooing maidens by means of false pretences. Here's a witty contemporary addition to the canon. (Footnote - song originally written by an Oz band, not the Lemonheads)."

Rio by Michael Nesmith - "Another drole number. Played this non-stop back in the day."

"Au revoir."

Jayne -

"Greetings RPMers, just one track from me this week as it comes in at nearly 10 minutes — a bit of modern chamber music."

"Happy (belated) May Day to All RPM comrades.

Two new releases this week and one from Another Man Done Gone who I last saw at The Hippodrome Great Yarmouth a few years back."

"That's All Folks."

Piers -

"Jayne and I had a visit from an old friend (yes, embracing both meanings) who has lived with her husband  in Vermont since the mid 80's.  Jenny and I  have been listening to music together since early in 1970 when we met. Not a great time for my graphic equaliser to go on the blink, but still I was pleased to be able to introduce Jenny to the delights that are ‘Rising Appalachia’ and ‘Gigspanner’."

Stromboli (Amazing Grace) by Rising Appalachia -

Awake Awake performed by Gigspanner Big Band -

"And a track from a live album by John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucía and Al Di Meola that I have owned since it came out in 1981. (Saturday Night In San Francisco). I haven’t bothered to give an airing to it in a while. That is a shame as I think that it seems to stand the test of time pretty well! Perhaps it is time to dig out Michael Hedges again..."

Frevo Rasgado by John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía -

John -

"Hello Everyone, I hope you're all keeping safe and well. Here are three tracks that I've listened to this week."

Let Yourself Go by Smoove & Turrell - "Another fine piece of  'Northern Coal Music' (as they call it) from Newcastle's premier Soul and Funk band."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5mcn5q7qd4

Bad Weed by Junior Murvin - "Junior Murvin's biggest hit was 'Police & Thieves' in 1976 (later covered by The Clash). The rhythm track was used several times for a number of other versions, including this one by Murvin himself, with Lee Perry at the controls."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CWulzplv6s

Tell Me When My Light Turns Green (Peel Session) by Dexy's Midnight Runners - "This version has so much energy...."

Dave -

"Hi RPMers, hope all is good with you guys. Here’s my 3 this week."

Tim -

"Here's my 3rd of May three..."

"My May Day celebration was pretty psychedelic...Kula Shaker at Leeds O2 Accademy. A new venue to me and very nice too. Crispian and the lads were on brilliant form. Here's one of my faves from the gig..."

Great Hosannah by Kula Shaker -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoupSLon5hM

Hole in the Hedge / Seamus Cooley's Jig performed by Martin Hayes - "Revisited Martin Hayes' album Under the Moon earlier this week and was reminded what a masterpiece of Irish trad music it is. Upon it's release I seem to remember Martin getting a bit of stick from certain quarters that he played the tunes too slowly...total rubbish. It was a much needed breath of fresh air and a message to the 100mph brigade that the tune is all about...well, the tune and not the speed."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrwWNP1a42M

Seven Light Years by Underground Zero - "Whilst having a bit of a sort out, I came across a bunch of photos I took in 1983 of the best space rock band from Norwich, no less, UZO. This is the lead off track from their debut album Never Reach The Stars (released on the Flicknife label, so stable mates with Hawkwind for a while), which I then obviously had to give a good loud play as I reminisced over the pics of one of their gigs at the old Theatre Royal Studio Club and then their appearance at the Lyng Summer Dream Fair. I was living in Suffolk at the time, little knowing that a few years later I would end up living in Elsing about a mile from where the festival had taken place. Weird ol' world, innit?"
