"Time to batten down the hatches... I hope that our Nina hasn't been swept away in the storms that are pounding the West coast this week. Please don't try wind surfing for a day or two...

In a week of news of escalating wars, global warming and violent storms I have chosen to go for some calming sounds.

There was once a time when what I recently heard described as ambient jazz formed a large part of the soundtrack of my life.  I was listening to ‘Oregon’ and John Scofield, Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Keith Jarrett and co. (admittedly often interspersed with Leo Kottke and John Fahey) back to back for days on end.

My tastes seemed to centre on one particular label. For a few years ECM hardly released anything that I didn’t enjoy.  It has been a while, but with all the awfulness that is going on, I guess that it seems to be time to seek out a little peace again (if only through our headphones) so I decided to check out a few of my favourites... be soothed folks…"

"Here's my 3 for the week. Best wishes to all RPMers as ever."

Stagger Lee performed by Lloyd Price - "I heard on the radio yesterday that it was the 100th anniversary of the first known recording of this song and a quick check confirmed that it was titled as "Stack-A-Lee" by Waring's Pennsylvanians.  The title variations just kept on coming  Lloyd Price recorded his version in 1958 and a copy was owned by my cousin and which I played to death on my uncle's radiogram that Christmas at the age of 11. I still love the great lyrics."

Come Tomorrow by Marie Knight - "Here's the first version recorded on the US Okeh label of a song which gave Manfred Mann a hit but failed to chart for Marie after two attempts and in spite of good reviews."

"And finally, Iris Dement rescheduled last week's Union Chapel concert and it was well worth the wait. (I hope the video works this time !)." (Huh?? Oh.....just checked, and last week's Iris Dement video has subsequently been blocked....it was all good last weekend when I listened to the edition. I was having a lot of problems with this kind of thing a few months ago. Something to do with performing rights/copyrights on Youtube which then seemed to be resolved. Hopefully it's not going to become a problem again....fingers are crossed. Tim.)

Cheers!"

Tim -

"Some new music this week..."

Dawning by Yasmin Williams with Aoife O'Donovan - "This is a new piece from the wonderful Yasmin Williams which she released about a month ago. Soul soothing and joyful music on acoustic guitar combined with the uplifting voice of Aoife O'Donovan, who some may remember as being the vocalist with 'newgrass' legends (in my book), Crooked Still."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3IepRzIQaI

Seek It With Me by Smoke Fairies - "Carried In Sound is the new album from Katherine and Jessica, otherwise known as Smoke Fairies. Coming out in two weeks time, they have previewed a couple of songs and here's one of them."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xnz-r8lkfQ

Down On The Barrier by Skinny Lister - "Released a few weeks ago, I've just caught up with the Skinny's new batch of catchy folky shantyesque pop-punk songs, indeed entitled 'Shanty Punk'. These lot always put a smile on my face; so energetic. Admittedly it's not ground breaking (thank God!), and this time their song writing tends to lean towards an Irish/Pogues vibe (as opposed to the new wave/Madness vibe of the last album), I dare you not to tap a toe or two along with this tribute to watching/playing live music!"
