Week 22 - Fri 2nd Jun

Welcome to the RPM Seven Day Soundtrack week ending Friday 2nd June 2023...brought to you from the sunny south west, this week, as we're having a little stay in Frome. What's caught the ears of the RPM collective this past week? Over to.....

Philip -

"Greetings to all RPMers from Swanton Morley. Honestly, you couldn't make it up! The Government appoints a "free speech tsar" while introducing new powers to clamp down on protesters. What can I say? How about "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others?"

Then again, the Government threatens legal action against the "Enquiry" that it set up... and Parliament is spending valuable time on examining the Schofield affair.

If this is the real world then surely satire is dead.

Meanwhile, back to the music..."

Sadie by Durand Jones - "...from his excellent new autobiographical solo album "Wait Til I Get Over." There's no "indication" of whether he'll be getting back together with his group. (Sorry about that... couldn't resist)."

Easier Said Than Done by Thee Sacred Souls - "...from their recent appearance on "Later," a programme most of which these days I fast-forward through. This is the second song I've selected recently by this rather fine L.A.-based group."

Stool Pigeon by Kid Creole and The Coconuts - "Heard this recently and was reminded that they were critics' darlings at the time, and that they came up with several hit singles that were both intelligent and catchy. This song was on their most commercially successful album, called "Wise Guys" in the USA but renamed "Tropical Gangsters" over here in 1982, a dodgy time for pop music as far as I am concerned, associated in my mind with domination of the NME by the pseudo ramblings of Morley and Penman, and when the best music paper you could buy was Ireland's "Hot Press."
