Week 45 - Fri 10th Nov

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 10th November, your weekly edition of energizing emanations direct from RPMers sound systems; over to...

John -

"Hi RPMers, Here are my three for this week. The first two are from one of a number of 'mix-tapes' that I unearthed from my garage last week. I'm sure as I work my way through them over the next few months, other little gems will appear among my RPM selections. On the spine of this particular cassette I'd written 'Soul Jazz Funk Disco Etc.'!?!.

The third track is by Steve Forbert, a singer I'm sure I've picked as one of my choices previously (probably Romeo's Tune).

Keep safe and well everyone."

"Best wishes, as ever, to my fellow RPMers."

The Way Of The World by Roger Daltrey - "Here's the first of my 3 for the week gleaned from a trawl I'm doing through LP's in the outer reaches of my collection.  It beats trying to follow politics! From the album Daltrey"

Rough Boys by Pete Townsend - "From his album Empty Glass."

"Thanks again for all the great music last week and thanks to Indra for the brief respite of the rain so far this week.

Three tracks this week hung together under the theme of Belgium. Before I spent much time there, my musical knowledge of that fine country was limited to Adolphe Sax, Plastic Bertrand and Django Reinhardt. That all changed when I spent a couple of years in the mid 80's working there. Sadly I missed the height of the Popcorn scene, however the jazz clubs in Brussels, Antwerp and elsewhere were pretty healthy. And so in anticipation of an impending visit to La Fayette in Ostende and Museum Magritte in Brussels here are 3 tracks instrumental in my Belgian musical education."

"The late great Toots Thielemans."

Soul Station by Toots Thielemans -

"James Brown with the track that gave it's name to the Belgian version of Northern Soul."

Piers -

"This week, I nearly had an accidental theme… Songwriters singing other people’s songs. I was listening to a live performance of Rock and Roll Doctor by Little Feat and following that, naturally I played that old FM Radio Broadcast of a song by Steve Winwood."

Can't Find My Way Home performed by Bonnie Raitt & Lowell George -

www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4tJiyU_gjY

"But I was reminded of the fact that Bonnie wrote a song which resurrected Chris Smither’s career when he was all but down and out… And logically, that should have lead me to his version of this song but Bonnie’s version is just so good… So… veering sharply away from that chain madness, here’s a masterful performance of a ‘Dumpty Dumpty’ blues song."

Love Me Like A Man by Bonnie Raitt -

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXcTDXgzVfU

"Despite having attended several UK blues festivals and as a result become a little jaded with UK purveyors of ‘Dumpty Dumpty’ blues, I am well aware that there are exceptions. Duster Bennett wrote the oddly ‘Dumpty Dumpty’ Jumping at Shadows which was superbly recorded by Peter Green who in turn wrote Black Magic Woman, covered by Carlos Santana…

But I thought it better to prove that Chris Smither’s career was worth saving by including  a performance of a favourite song written by Roland Salley which I first heard sung by John Prine..."

Chris Smither - Killing the Blues

"But everyone really ought to hear this gem again, so could I please beg your indulgence and include this as a bonus track?" (Oh, OK....Tim.)

In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine and Iris DeMent -

Jean -

"The big music news for me is the issue of The Beatles last recording. What a labour of love by all involved over many years and with technology; George and John in the video too."

Now And Then by The Beatles -

"Found this blast from my youth. A typical teen music show where all the artists joined in the chorus. Loved the whole LJB sound and look."

I've Got My Mojo Workin' performed by Long John Baldry & The Beatles -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eroobdCORsI

"Here’s a great video of a performance of a song that always reminds me of my last days at Grammar School."

Glad All Over performed by John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Joan Jett & John Fogerty -

"Enjoy the week everyone and keep well."

"New music from two psychedelic albums released a fortnight apart has made up the majority of my listening this week, with an old time interlude..."

Lotus Unfolding by Ozric Tentacles - "From new album Lotus Unfolding, here's the title track. Lucky Norfolk based RPMers can catch them live at the Waterfront in Norwich on 29th November...highly recommended."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMnQiB8KKBQ

Old Horse and Buggy performed by The Wolfe Brothers - "The week's tune to learn on the ol' tenor banjo."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSWjDs8i-1o

"I especially recommend the Ozrics gig as the tour is a double headliner with Gong who carry on Daevid Allen's legacy subsequent to his death in 2015 with such musical integrity and imagination that I reckon they are now in a second golden period. Released a week ago, this is from new Album Unbending Ascending...and if you can figure out the time signature, your maths is better than mine!!"
