"A while back (1998 ) Jayne and I attended a tiny 'bluegrass and roots' festival held in the shadow of two huge cooling towers, in the Ironbridge gorge. For a venue that catered for less than a thousand souls it It had an incredibly good line up including Tim O'brian, Ralph Stanley, Scott Nygaard and various other bands flown in from the US, and in the 'roots' category the home grown artists included Rory McLeod, a very young Lisa Carthy (who jammed with Johnny Marr),  Edward the II & the Red Hot Polkas and also included Sid Kipper who performed on walnut shell castanets and on Rory Mc's trombone which he played percussively  like a large triangle. After the official festival had ended shortly before midnight, around campfires and under awnings, artists and audience (everyone seemed to have an instrument) jammed deep into the night.

On the Sunday afternoon after visiting a nearby chippy, Jayne and I went for a constitutional and whilst poking our chips with little wooden forks, we stopped in the middle of the iron bridge for a chat with the geezer who wore a snow white Stetson.

We three  gazed down the gorge contemplatively and having discussed the origins of the industrial revolution with Ralph (A very astute and witty man)  the subject matter quite naturally turned to the effect of the Grateful Dead on modern Bluegrass.

I found this whilst trawling for the video of the event..."

"I've a theme this week, having just read Bob Dylan's book published last year, The Philosophy of Modern Song. Bob chooses 66 songs to write about, which gave me a playlist for a couple of days, because of course, I had to listen to each song before reading what he says about it. So here's three, that spookily have links to what Piers just mentioned..."

"...some bluegrass...pre-Grateful Dead, but showing what can be done with one chord sounding like a steam train at full throttle. Bob states that "bluegrass is the other side of heavy metal...both musical forms steeped in tradition". So that's why I love both; everything is now very clear. Compare the rhythmic feel of Overkill by Motorhead (live No Sleep version) or Electric Eye by Judas Priest and I think you'll see where he's going with this....although having done just that, The Osborne Brothers are playing faster...thrash bluegrass, then?"

Ruby, Are You Mad  performed by The Osborne Brothers -

"And here's the song that gave Gerry Garcia the name for his other band. I seem to remember Charlie Poole as being an influence on Steve Earle as well. Both certainly got into some scrapes in their younger days."

Old and Only In The Way by Charlie Poole -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbFMN6YyZ5I

"Finishing with Gerry's other band...described by Bob as "a postmodern jazz musical rock and roll dynamo", he states The Grateful Dead "are from a different world than their contemporaries....all of them together wouldn't even make a part of the Dead"; now you know."

Truckin' by The  Grateful Dead -
