Week 8 - Fri 23 Feb
Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 23rd February 2024. Here's some nice noises heard this week from the collective's gramophones...over to...
John -
"Hi Everyone, I hope you're keeping safe and well (and dry!). Here are my three for this week."
Pocahontas by Neil Young - "Opening track from Neil's unreleased 1976 solo album 'Hitchhiker'. It was finally released in 2017 as part of his Archive Series although a version of this particular song did appear on 'Rust Never Sleeps', released in 1979. It was also scheduled to appear on another Neil Young 'lost album' from 1977 (Chrome Dreams) which finally saw the light of day in July of last year. Confusing or what....?"
The One Who Loves You by Dexy's - "Another side one, track one gem. This one is from last year's wonderful 'The Feminine Divine' LP."
"Before this turns into a scene from 'High Fidelity' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uImDLvX0Bk), my next selection is track one from disc three of a 3CD box set of King Tubby's dub recordings."
Dub Fever by King Tubby - "From the 'Father Of Dub' collection. Unfortunately, the sleeve notes are extremely brief so I have no idea who the musicians were on the original recording."
Piers -
"Jayne and I were driving home from a shopping trip on thursday afternoon and I had Radio 3 playing and the subject of the 'Afternoon Concert' was Ruth Gipp's Symphony No 1 at the end it was said that it was the piece's first performance since it's debut in 1945. I think that a tragedy as I was really very taken with it but providing direct link has proved beyond me. It can be found on BBC Sounds but takes a bit of fiddle faddling about, so if you feel like it... It comes up at exactly 1hour into the broadcast."
Starts at 1:00:23 and lasts until 1.39:00
"Jayne and I have ordered a couple of replacement windows. The guy that has made them Steve wasn’t cheap but it looks like he is pretty good at what he does… To save a bit of money we have had them made up plain to be painted by us. We’ve went to Aldi and while we trolled the middle isles found and bought some undercoat so we are all set except that neither of us can decide what colour the topcoat should be… I guess they’ll be cream like the other windows but it might have been an opportunity to change them all… Anyway Steve rang this morning to say that the windows are ready to pick up! So today's selections are one that I have continually had at the top of the pile closest to the CD player for a couple of weeks (from Olivier Chaney's 'Shelter' Album) and two that I have been playing whilst panicking about actually having to do stuff!"
Arches by Olivia Chaney -
Pretty Polly performed by Coon Creek Girls -
Bonus Track - "Tim - Could I please include this bonus track for those folk who can't be bothered to fiddle about with the BBC app...?" (Go on then, Tim)
Buddy Bolden's Blues by Jelly Roll Morton -
David -
"Hope all RPMers are managing to stay flood free in this really damp and dreary weather. My three tracks this week come from 3 albums I picked up on a recent trip to Utrecht in The Netherlands. It always warms my heart when I return to a place and find a music store or market stall is still there. It's like meeting up with an old pal sitting at the same bar in their local."
Lone Didion by Andrew Bird - "...from Inside Problems."
I Fall In Love Too Easily performed by Amos Lee - "...from his slightly underwhelming Tribute to Chet Baker album My Ideal."
"...and finally, the never underwhelming...."
Charles Lloyd here with The Marvels and La Llorna -
