Week 12 - Fri 22 Mar

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 22nd March 2024. Looking forward to another edition of good vibes from the RPM Collective? Your wait is over...and indeed it's over to...

Kevin -

"Hello all. Here are my three for the week."

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young with Crazy Horse - "Discovered this AFTER falling in love with After the Goldrush. What a revelation!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsZjKQEN1tY&list=OLAK5uy_mvh532sl-dR-WtmIeGzlTuK-OKOGeFGEU&index=3&ab_channel=NeilYoung-Topic

Can't Trust Your Neighbor by Freddie King - "My baby used to go over for salt - but I found out he was giving her sugar."

"As a footnote to last week's contributions, I looked up some of those artists that I hadn't heard of before and was struck by the fact that two of David's commemorated trio died on the same day of the month (March 9) in 2020 and 2024; and Karl Wallinger died on March 10 2024, just a day after Malcolm Holcombe.

But that's not so strange perhaps. Apparently if you only need 23 randomly selected people in a room to find that two share a birthday.

No more useless comments from me. Have a good one."

Jean -

"Hello again RPMers. I'm going to pick music that I heard in New Orleans recently. It's diverse in the extreme and I hope you enjoy very different genres from my usual choices."

After You've Gone performed by Clint Baker's New Orleans Swing Band - "Saw a band like this at my hotel. The place was packed with dancers of all ages having a great time. It was very energetic at times and therefore a good exercise too."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KmdnHngCTQ

Rocket In My Pocket by Brass-A-Holics GoGo Brass Funk Band - "Went to a free music afternoon at Lafayette Square. They have one every two weeks with any type of band performing. Brass-a-Holics did a sort of Rap/Hip Hop/ rock Brass infectious music. Everybody was dancing."

Uptown by Flagboy Giz - "Bear with the first singer on this clip...then Flagboy Giz comes on stage with his gang. I didn't realise that the outfits were authentic Black Indian Mardi Gras costumes. They needed a huge stage especially for the head-dresses but they were spell-binding to watch. Can honestly say I haven't seen anything like this before. Great afternoon in the park, though.

Will have some more next week. Keep well everyone."

"Warm wishes for better weather and thanks for more great tunes to all RPMers. Loading up a memory stick for a hire car road trip when Charles Lloyd's latest birthday release dropped into my letter box. So I happily listened and immediately downloaded it. So here is a track from The Sky Will Still Be Here Tomorrow, together with a couple of others from recent ECM New Series releases."

Booker's Garden by Charles Lloyd -

"I'm a complete sucker for almost any jazz reworking of the Garcia/ Hunter songbook, here is..."

John Schofield with Uncle John's Band -

"My thanks to Philip for his track last week and yes I did "get it" (I think). I am returning the dedication with another calendar referenece, my favourite Norwegian trumpeter."

Arve Henriksen and The Beauty of Sundays -

"That's All Folks."

John -

"Hi Everyone, here are my three tracks for this week. All listened to on Tuesday; the first was as I was driving to my studio, the second as I was heavily involved working on my current painting in my studio and the third was on my journey home."

North Coast Recollections (Extract) by John Betjeman -

San Diego Serenade by Tom Waits -

"Best wishes and thanks for continuing to share your weekly listening habits."

Tony -

"Here are my selections for the week. Best wishes to all as ever."

Rikki Don't Lose That Number by Steely Dan - "Looking forward to seeing them again (though missing Walter Becker this time) in June supporting The Eagles (also missing members but Vince Gill should be interesting as a replacement for Glen Frey)."

Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKiVttFnqkY

Mr Soft by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - "Sad news about the passing of Steve Harley. Lucky to catch him at Norwich Arts Centre a few years back (2012?) and came away happy. The Psychomodo was certainly a different album back in the early 70's but seemed to fit in with lots of other bands that were putting it about around the same time like Roxy Music, Sailor and Stackridge."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcpyX1jq_Dc

"Which prompts me to ask as I revisit the 70's....can I have a short little bonus track please Tim?" ("Go on then..." Tim)

Fundamentally Yours Stackridge - "...from their album The Man In The Bowler Hat."

Piers -

"Olivier Chaney has her new album out this week.  I bought a pre release download a couple of weeks ago and I liked it on first hearing. The tracks lock together to create a very complete set of musical ideas without being to obviously contrived. It also seem to grow on you and get better too! Like ‘Home and Away’ by Clive Gregson and Christine Collister,  I think it is going to be one of those records that comes to define a period for me."

Circus of Desire  by Olivier Chaney -

www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTaZHRmMces

"I have been diddling about with a couple of classical tunes recently. One Johann Strauss II - Vienna Blood Waltz (Wiener Blut Waltz) is a bit too Klingon for me and isn’t going anywhere. The other one I used to play with a band. I always thought it one of the most perfect improvisations by Django. (I probably favour this because Grappelli’s fiddle isn’t obscuring DR’s eloquent playing!)."

Danse Norvegienne by Django Reinhardt -

www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmjz6keLPPY

"It is also worth checking out the version that Django first heard… A folk tune collected by Edvard Grieg."

Grieg: Norwegian Dance Op. 35 No. 2 - Giorgia Tomassi & Alessandro Stella

Jayne -

"Greetings to the RPM posse; here are a couple of tunes heard performed by local musicians this week – Kevin and Perce were also present — and a piece that I think has real balance, appropriate I think for our proximity to the Spring equinox."

Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice performed by The Mary Wallopers -

Our Town performed by Iris DeMent -

New Dawn by Anoushka Shankar -

Nina -

"Hi folks

Mega brief blurb, as I'm mega tardy...even by my 'standards'...sorry Tim.

Kitesurf mate Matt (originally from Shetland, but lives in Elsing), has been in Cornwall this week. Lovely to be on the water with 1 of my kite clan from over east."

Ride On by Christy Moore -

https://youtu.be/5wnEVoyukU4?feature=shared

"I selected this before, but it bears repeating - for St Pat's on Sunday + for 1 of my closest, (half Irish) east coast kitesurfing pals who was sectioned + plonked in a secure unit this week. He's happiest on the waves, very sad.

"Onto brighter notes.. I hugely enjoyed hearing Show of Hands on Mark Radcliffe's Folk show this week, so here's 2 from them."

The Ride by Show of Hands - "There's a fair bit of chat at the start of this clip. I quite like it, but if it's not your thing scroll ahead to 3 mins 25 seconds - that's when the music starts."

Cheers!"
