Week 27 - Fri 7th July

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 7th July. We're back from our summer break at the Folk in a Field Festival where we watched some super bands and bumped into fellow RPMers, John, Jayne and Piers....and lapsed RPMer Anto. It was lovely to see you all.....looking forward to next year. It's a slimmed down edition this week due to holiday trips and yet more festivals...over to...

"Assorted inspirations this week: one new album just received, one on order, and a choice made after reading a newspaper interview and watching an edition of 'Later'.

Carole With an E by Brennen Leigh - "Her last album took us back to the sounds of the '40s, but the new one goes back only as far as the sixties for inspiration. As a lyricist I think her gift is to be able to write squarely in the tradition yet with a decidedly modern, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, attitude. Watching her videos I keep expecting her to wink at the camera."

More Than Friends by Lukas Nelson and Promise of The Real with Lainey Wilson - "Willie's boy and backing band (which has served as Neil Young's band) from forthcoming album "Sticks and Stones."

Everyday Now by Texas - "Sharleen Spiteri's recent interviews promoting a "Very Best of" album reminded me that her band have made some very fine records."

My Walking Shoes Don't Fit Me Any More / Train 45 performed by Flats and Sharps - "Here's my favourite band of Folk in a Field 2023. Top musicians and a nice bunch of lads."

Roslin Castle / Miss Gordon of Gight performed by Alasdair Fraser & Tony Mcmanus - "From the Return To Kintail album, here's something from two masters of their instruments."

No Surrender by Bruce Springsteen - "Bruce rocked me back home from Norfolk to North Yorkshire. I hadn't played the Born in the USA album for yonks. It's one of those albums you think you have heard so often that you therefore don't play it any more. So, a conscious effort to have a listen made me realise that this is a true classic with not a duff track on it....and this is one of my favorite Bruce songs ever with the immortal lines, 'We busted out of class, had to get away from those fools, we learnt more from a three minute record, baby, than we ever learnt in school.' Rock 'n' roll poetry."
