Week 35 - Fri 1st Sept

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 1st September 2023. This weeks musical mix in the order in which they popped into my inbox....over to....

"A belated welcome to our new member David. I really enjoyed Guy Forsyth Blues Band - one of his picks. David wouldn’t have known that the Blues genre is one of my favourites.  I’ve watched several YouTube videos of the band now and will be looking out for an album soon.

A random collection this week – mainly from watching concerts on tv.  Keep listening to the music everyone. It makes you happy. "

"Returning to Colorado last weekend I was fortunate enough to catch a couple of live shows. Firstly it was Session Americana at a very poorly attended show at Goosetown Tavern on Colfax Avenue, a delightfully decadent strip.

"Next up was a sell out show by Sonny Landreth at The Soiled Dove in Denver. Good to see the man is still at the top of his game."

"I then headed to Fort Collins where Son Volt were scheduled to play at Washinton's. Sadly, though I had got the day right, I got the month wrong. I'd already bought the Day of The Doug CD so I had to make do with that."

"A little short of inspiration this week, until I spotted the word "saffron" in today's "I" Paper codeword. Then I couldn't get Donovan out of my head, so here's a sort of exorcism... it might just work."

Mellow Yellow by Donovan - "I believe that's Mr. McCartney confirming the correctness of Mr. Leitch's statements."

"Then we were sitting in the Lemon and Rosemary Yard sampling their excellent coffee and cakes, and there were some '80s tunes on the sound-system, so we played "guess the year." These are the two I got right."

"Earlier in the year, Jayne and I ventured to the County Show where, wandering about in the sunshine, we bumped into Tony Hall. Despite the fact that I don’t think that he had any idea of who I was, we happily reminisced about the trays of free sausages that were put on the bar of The Plough on St Benedicts Street when we played darts on Sunday lunch times in the 1970s

I am bending the rules a bit as this is a live performance featuring a few songs… but it is glorious. Tony’s delight in playing for his audience shines through in every song.  If any of you can be bothered to scroll ahead please select Tony’s lovely version of ‘Down In The River To Pray’ if not please be satisfied with turning the video off after the first track, Hard Times Of Old England."

Viewbank by Project Smok - "Here's a new band to me, flagged up by Luke, organiser of the Folk in a Field festival. Who doesn't love a low whistle...?"

World's In A Tangle by Lightnin' Hopkins - "....and another from the 'Playing For The Man At The Door' collection...."

Out of the Shadows by Hawkwind - "I've played a few less-often aired Hawkwind discs this week. This is from 1990s Space Bandits opus, a track which the band performed live for a while, and which became a live favourite of mine, before they recorded it for this album. It features the return of Simon House on violin and I've chosen this live cut found on the later expanded CD edition as Simon's space fiddle is more prominent than on the version used on the LP. I was tempted to have the LPs opening track, Images, for the mind blowing wah-wah fiddle break, but I'm sure I've regaled you with that before....."
