"In response to Nina's request for feedback last week, I enjoyed her postings of Ashley Harding, but in response to her comment about not being the biggest fan of Americana, I would like to repeat my contention that pretty much all of English language popular music as we know it IS Americana. Please allow me to quote the splendid Allison Russell on the subject, from a superb piece of writing she did recently for the Fall edition of the No Depression print magazine:

"Too often Americana is framed in relation to, or even adjacent to, so-called "country music," cast as mainstream country's poor cousin. In my lexicon, Americana is so much more. It encompasses and fosters nigh on every genre of modern music and song including gospel, blues, jazz, country, folk (what we used to call rock and roll), R & B, hip-hop, pop, and beyond- because almost every genre of modern song has been influenced by or born out of the melting pot that is "America." "

She goes on to say that she does not mean only the USA, but all of the Americas including South and Central America and the Caribbean, and talks of succeeding waves of human diasporas, and of her idealism in believing in the possibility of building an international "beloved community." She finishes by saying "We shall not be overcome."

After all that, three selections that the traditionalists among us will certainly recognise as "Americana"."

When Country Came Back To Town by Brent Cobb - "...from his highly enjoyable new "Southern Star" album. He name-checks about 30 of his contemporaries in this song. Does anybody know if this is a record? I'm sure the late great Fred Dellar would have been able to tell us."

I Think I'm In Love With You by Chris Stapleton - "...from his forthcoming album 'Higher'."

Are You Sure by Luther Dickinson - "...from his forthcoming album 'Magic Music For Family Folk'. I thought news of this record might put Tim on high alert." ("Certainly something to look forward to...",Tim)

High Flying Electric Bird by Pete Brown & Piblokto! - "From the amazing 1970 LP 'Things May Come And Things May Go But The Art School Dance Goes On Forever'. Pete Brown passed away earlier this year but he  leaves a legacy which includes a few volumes of poetry and many fine albums (including 'A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark' by Pete Brown & His Battered Ornaments) but he will also be remembered for his contributions as lyricist on many songs by Cream."

"Here's three music highlights from the past week's listening pleasures..."

Killing Floor performed by The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "This performance is from the forthcoming release from Experience Hendrix. Hollywood Bowl 1967 is supposedly an unheard and never released concert which in fact was a support slot to a possibly gobsmacked audience of Mamas and Pappas fans. Surely, there must have been a bootleg of this knocking about ?.....but anyway, I've never heard this before, and what impressed me was how 'on fire' Mitch and Noel were as a backing band. This was two weeks before Are You Experienced was released and the band were unknowingly on the cusp of global recognition. Brilliant."

Cripple Creek performed by Flatt and Scruggs - "Got a bit obsessed with this tune this week trying to thrash out a way of playing it on tenor banjo..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lylfNG144xY

No One Came by Deep Purple - "Gave Fireball an spin and had forgotten this was on it. I love the off beat bass pulse and organ stabs....and false ending. No idea what Gillan is on about though!!"
