"Songs that persist...

With the annual Burston Rally rapidly approaching (Sunday 3rd of Sept), it is sad to say John L Handcox's 1930s classic still has meaning today. I have also Included a more modern interpretation of the song which I first heard a few years ago and lead me to listen to the 'rabble rousing'  original."

The Short Answer by Billy Bragg - " 'Between Marx and marzipan in the dictionary there was Mary'. Fantastic lyric, despite being factually incorrect."

"Last we I alluded to the reason why I was in Oregon. Some 16 or so years ago on one of Tom Russell's Train trips I met Tom's guitarist Thad Beckman and we became friends. I met up with Thad on many occasions when he travelled with Tom and socially with him and his long time partner Susan. Thad was a fine, fine man and a great musician  Sadly Thad died back in January and Susan arranged a memorial concert and celebration of his life on what would have been his 71st birthday with a number of fellow musicians Thad played with in Portland. Susan kindly invited me and my wife Sarah to this and so I'd like to share 3 pieces of Thad's music."

"I've been listening to the new Rhiannon Giddens album, for which some reviews have been rather lukewarm. Personally I think it's a grower, and my first submission this week is one of the tracks that seemed most "immediate" to me. My other two choices come from the so-called "freebies" that came with this month's "Uncut" magazine (Tom Waits on the cover). Their CD of "the month's best music" is their most enjoyable for ages, and the Millers' song comes from that and will be on their new album to be released next month. Subscribers also got a sampler of Margo Cilker's music, and my third choice is from that (it seems familiar, so I'm sure I must have heard it somewhere... has it been on the RPM website before?)."

Yet To Be by Rhiannon Giddens with Jason Isbell -

Don't Make Her Cry by Buddy and Julie Miller - "Interesting song-writing credit: Bob Dylan, Regina McCrary, Julie Miller."

That River by Margo Cilker - "...from her 2021 album 'Pohorylle'."

"It's a folky three this week...."

Reels: John O'Groats House / Traditional Irish Reel / The Ladies Pantalettes performed by Julie Fowlis - "Julie's first album is playing in the car at the moment. As well as being a superb singer, she's pretty handy with a whistle as well..."

Tom Mellin's Hornpipe performed by the Shem Fillmore Quartet - "My nephew, Shem, stayed with me last week and a bit of music was played. Here he is on 10 string mandolin with his band."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqSX-UwelA8

Trip to Yorkshire performed by Kevin Lees and Sebastian Bloch - "This is a tune using various permutations of the title Shem had found whilst trawling through old manuscripts online, earliest version 1744. Then discovered it was one of the latest videos uploaded on the Good Tune channel. Now busy trying to learn it..."
