"Hi folks. Hope you're all well + thanks as ever for the fantastic variety of listening pleasure you provide.

A lot of my time's been dominated by gig rowing training in recent weeks - I'm by far the most inexperienced member of the women's crew I'm competing with in the World Championships on the Isles of Scilly next weekend, determined not to let the team down - and have fun!

Catch up of 7DS was so enjoyable this week. Nice to hear from Alan again + thanks to Jackie for Leonard Cohen + top 3 Talking Heads.

Special thanks to Kevin for including Philip Larkin, his poems always speak to me + the Specials from John.  Words and music from both were important in my formative years as a Coventry native.

Gratitude to everyone for broadening my musical horizons, long may it continue.

3 chilled choices from me this week..."

"More great music last week from so many unknown to me. Thanks.

I headed off to The Kitchen Garden, Birmingham in anticipation of a reunion with a couple of stalwarts from The Paisley Underground era on their UK tour."

"That's All Folks."

Piers -

"Those of you that have been paying attention… there, you at the back, wake up! As I was saying...you will have noticed the brief quotations from a couple of these tunes in my post of the track created by Joe Byrd of The United States of America last week! They have been stuck in my head since first hearing his mix (Mash Up) on the 'Rock Machine Turns You On' compilation in 1967-early ’68.  I have even been known to have a go at playing them myself...I love this Harlan & Stanley rendition."

Marching Through Georgia performed by Harlan & Stanley (1904) -

The Red, White & Blue by California Consolidated Drum Band -

"And something that I heard many years ago beautifully covered by Mike Seeger of The New Lost City Ramblers but nice as his adaptation was, it wasn't as gorgeous as Etta B’s version… There is a tune of the same name by Don Gibson and The King Cotton Kinfolks. It was on a 78, and if it had been played at 16rpm it could perhaps be the same tune? Hmmmmm! Maybe Etta couldn’t be bothered to get up and wind the victrola and thought, “oh that sounds nicer!’."

Carolina Breakdown by Etta Baker (Solo - no Cara Phillips!) -

"The weather is going to improve. Not sure when. Enjoy the music."

Kevin -

"Hello everybody peeps. Here's my tuneful trio. Thanks to David for the Charles Lloyd list - I look forward to checking him out. (Oh, and by the way, my favourite Canary moment from the last 60 years has to be Goss' volley against Bayern in 1993!)"

Barnacled Warship by Johnny Flynn - " I've been listening to 'Been Listening' - my fave Johnny Flynn album by some yards. Always associate this with the period of living and working in Boston (Mass. not Lincs.) We were there seven months and by good fortune we got to see JF playing in a smallish club there. (We also saw McCartney at the Red Sox stadium.) I love the percussive cellos on this track."

Stereo by Pavement - "Thanks to Dave for sending me back to my Pavement albums with his choice last week. I was going to offer one of my absolute faves of theirs, 'Shady Lane', but I see Dave chose it a couple of years back. Still, this too is an excellent example of their work."

Jenny & The Ess-Dog by Stephen Malkmus - "Much as I enjoy Pavement, I am also a fan of Stephen Malkmus' solo work. This song is witty and catchy and goes through my head for ages after I've listened to it again."

"Here's this week's triple layer sound confection..."

Killing Floor performed by Jimi Hendrix (live at the BBC) - "Jimi playing Wolf for a BBC session. Although he played this song live a lot (previously having endowed you with the Hollywood Bowl rendition), he never recorded a studio version. This is as close as we get...but even this was recorded live in the studio."

Moanin' At Midnight performed by Howlin' Wolf - "And here is Wolf...been playing the Moanin' In The Moonlight album...this is just such a killer 'harp' riff."

Kalifornia Blues by Kula Shaker - "Gearing up for their gig in Leeds next Weds...here's another track from the recent and rather fantastic Natural Magick release."
