Week 46 - Fri 17th Nov

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 17th November 2023. Here's what's caught the ears of the RPM collective this week; over to...

David -

"Greetings to RPM folks and best wishes to you all.

"After a relatively dry weekend in Flanders, I made my way to a sodden Brussels where I spent a few hours in the René Magritte Museum before heading back to The London Jazz Festival to see two of the finest band leaders and saxophone players still working today. But first up it's..."

Late for the Sky by Jackson Browne - "..." if it's all reet with Magritte "."

"That's All Folks."

Philip -

"Daft isn't it? I've got copies of both the Uncut and Mojo year-end editions featuring their selections of what they consider to be the year's best albums. They must have been prepared with fully two months of the year to go, and of course both carry the dateline "January 2024." They have started me thinking, however, about what my choices might be. ("Absolutely....start thinking what might make it into your years top 5s lists i.e. top 5 new releases of 2023, top 5 performances, songs which have been significant, books, beer...what ever takes your imagination. Check out previous years for inspiration at the Top 5 End of Year Lists tab." Tim.)

"I've been watching the ITV Sunday night crime thriller "Six- Four," thinking "I know that voice, and that song" as the opening credits played. Here it is..."

The Devil Gun by Frankie Miller - "...from his 1974 album recorded in Atlanta and produced by Allen Toussaint, "Frankie Miller's High Life." This in turn got me thinking about both other Scottish crime dramas and songs by Allen Toussaint."

No Mean City by Maggie Bell - "The theme from "Taggart," ("There's been a murrrder")."

Brickyard Blues performed by Maria Muldaur - "I believe I might previously have selected Frankie Miller's version of this, which was my favourite song on "High Life." This version is fine too. It's been done by Little Feat as well."

"Well, I’ve celebrated another birthday this last week and I got to thinking of years back when my friends and I always went out dancing to celebrate. Here’s a few tunes that always gets everyone on to the dancefloor and socialising. Go on, let your John Travolta out! Have a good week and keep well."

Gabriel's Swing performed by Philippe Brun and his Swing Band -  "This is included in my 10 CD Django Reinhardt box (now onto disc 4).
