Week 5 - Fri 2nd Feb

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 2nd February... choices posted in the order in which they arrived this week...over to...

Piers -

"Nice to have Alan's contribution last week."

"Events of this week put me in mind of one of Jimi's classic tracks which in turn lead to a couple of other favourites from the mid 70s..."

1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be) by Jimi Hendrix -

"A conservative estimate by Rudolph Joseph Rummel stated that between 1955 and 1975 more than 3,595,000 died in Vietnam. Casualties were far higher. The war was still staggering on in 1974 when the Atlanta Rhythm Section tried to tell the politicians that the war was over. (They took no notice until Saigon Fell in 1975) but it was a brave attempt."

"All we ever wanted was a little peace but the age of Aquarius has never really been given a chance..."

Philip -

"I missed out last week (someone, naming no names, was hogging the computer). ("I'm staying out of this one"...Tim).

So, this week's selections are..."

You're Still Standing There by Steve Earle with Lucinda Williams - "This comes from the second in a sequence of four superb albums Mr. Earle made in the second half of the 90s. ("Train a Comin'"- 1995, "I Feel Alright"- 1996, "El Corazon"- 1997, and "The Mountain"- 1999, with The Del McCoury Band)."

All That Heaven Will Allow performed by The Mavericks - "...from their 1994 album "What A Crying Shame." Possibly the best ever Springsteen cover? Certainly up there with the likes of Fire or Because The Night, not least because of Raul Malo's Orbisonic (if there's no such word, there should be) vocals."

Joy by Lucinda Williams featuring Steve Earle - "...in a live performance, though I'm not sure he really contributes much other than his presence. This was on Lucinda's great 1998 album "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road." A word to the wise: don't take her joy, OK?"

"Best wishes to everyone."

David -

"Thanks to all for the great music again last week,

I was building a playlist for a for a road trip I am making next week. It's a journey I made as a hitch hiker 60 years ago, so I decided to look at what was in the Billboard 100 then.

Here are 3 singles I had and remember most."

The Trashmen with Surfin' Bird -

"That's All Folks."

Kevin -

"Greetings all."

Long Legs by the Magic Numbers - "Playing musical 'tag' with John, who chose a different number from this album last week, and sent me straight back to my MN albums, which I haven't listened to for about 15 years! Thanks John. This was always one of my favourite numbers."

Grey Tickles, Black Pressure by John Grant - "There is video footage of this song, but the best one I found (audio-wise) was Bowdlerised, so I stick with the studio album version. John Grant was raised in the midwest and later Colorado where his homosexuality was problematic (look it up if you want). Long story short, he moved to  Iceland where, inter alia, he found safe refuge - and perhaps a haven of acceptance. His album has the same name as this song and is a combination of Icelandic for 'midlife crisis' and Turkish for 'nightmare', Cheery chap. Absolutely loved this album and chased him up at Nos Alive 2016 in Lisbon and then at Latitude. He's a fabulous live performer - really engaged with the crowd."

Second Movement (Adagio), String Quintet in C, by Schubert - "OK, so maybe some of you have zoned out already, but if you're still on board, here's a sublime weekend treat. Have loved this whole peculiarly arranged quintet (two cellos, rather than two violas) from the moment I heard it. Best memories are of the Wigmore Hall in or around 1990.  (A note on this choice of performance; better vids are out there, but you can't believe this line-up of players. And, ironically, I'd suggest just listening and ignore the images on this vid.) I want this played at my funeral. I think I've struck the right note for a festive start to the weekend."

Try Jah Love by Third World - "From their LP you've Got The Power which I recently purchased (among other things) from the amazing Uptown Records in Spalding. If you fancy a trip across the Fens then this place is definitely worth a look: it's huge! Situated bang in the middle of a Garden Centre (!) means that there is free parking, restaurant etc.. Check out the website."

With You There To Help Me (Live at Montreux) by Jethro Tull - "Sky Arts recently broadcast Jethro Tull's film of their performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2003. Some great flute/guitar interplay between Ian Anderson and Martin Barre and sterling support from the rest of the band. This track originally appeared as the opening track of their third LP Benefit, released in 1970."

Tim -

"I feel it's a bit of an odd selection this time...but these are the tracks which have stuck in my mind from the few things I've played this week.

Oh...and regarding Kevin's question last week as to favouring studio tracks, live concert footage or official videos when choosing one's RPM selection; with my choices, I tend towards the studio audio track fisrt...I'm not that bothered about watching a vid, I'd sooner listen to the music. Sometimes however, the music can't be found without having the accompanying film (my recent Kula Shaker choices come to mind), or the visuals just go hand in hand with the music so well, as does my second choice this week (in my opinion). It is of course down to each RPMer and how you want to present your selections...   "

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd - " "Came across some Pink Floyd LPs for a few quid in a charity shop, so test played them prior to selling them on and had this then rattling around my head every time I picked up my acoustic guitar..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqdoHPFW_5M

You Gotta Quit Kicking My Dog Around performed by Spencer and Rains - "I first came across this as an old time song and recently wondered if there was perhaps a tune version I could learn. Discovered this delightfully played rendition....and I think the audience is brilliant as well..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ_N2skWUqI

Nothing At All by Deep Purple - "The Whoosh album is back in the car CD player and this is back in my head on repeat play..."
