"I've survived two sessions of walking football in recent weeks without injury...that's a result in itself! As I write I'm contemplating whether to go again this evening... it's still rather hot here (27.5 degrees at 7.10 pm) so I might stay at home...

Meanwhile, I'll start this week's selections with a celebration of the return of The Turnpike Troubadours. Keep properly hydrated folks and slap on the sunscreen where required."

"Hi everybody. I hope that you are all as content a I am at the moment. Despite the warmth and humidity, my week seemed get off to a good start with further delving into Finnish music. I knew that I was tuned into the zeitgeist when my current favourite TV show, Maigret (Starring Bruno Cremer), was a multi murder mystery set in Helsinki! Where I got bogged down was when I got to the Kantele (Dulcimer ). There seems to be a general consensus amongst Finnish folk musicians that the tune to play on the five string (As opposed to the classical multi string version) is Kalevala Kuluu ikä laulamattaki. There are dozens of recordings of it, and most are by two men with beards. Sometimes they are accompanied by additional vocalists and other musical instruments. I wasn’t sure whether it was the same chaps playing it at different stages of their lives or if all Finnish folkies look alike. A bit of both perhaps  (I admit that at first glance English folkies must seem similar too! But being British(ish) I realise that there is a difference between those that prefer a straight glass to a dimpled jug. Perhaps I missed the Finnish nuances.)"

"This is a pretty straightforward rendition of another song with a similar tune. (You’ll get the picture). I have to admit that life only got more complicated when I discovered the recordings of Latvian kokle."

Nuku Nuku performed by Merja Soria -

"I spent last Saturday playing with my friend John for a lovely group of folks at the local  allotment association annual ‘Gathering’  in the garden  of the Bircham Centre in Reepham.  Once again tapping into the zeitgeist this seems to chime with the current produce gluts."

"My three this week are inspired by an exhibition, a radio pod cast and a tune I can't get out of my head."

Acorn performed by The Spell Song Singers - "We managed to get to the Lost Spells exhibition at Danby Lodge, North York Moors National Park Centre last Monday, as Jackie alluded to. It's an exhibition of the beautiful and wonderfully observed nature paintings by Jackie Morris combined with some of Robert Macfarlane's poems from their Lost Spells book. It's this book which then became two albums of Macfarlane's words set to music written by Rachel Newton, Beth Porter, Jim Molyneux, Julie Fowlis, Karine Polwart, Seckou Keita and Kris Drever. I've revisited both albums a few times this week...they just keep on giving.......

Jayne and myself have had a few tracks in past 7DSs from the Spell Songs albums...this one struck a chord after reading about a child in a primary school class called Acorn Class who didn't know what an acorn was. That's so sad."

ACORN.

Written by Robert Macfarlane.

As flake is to blizzard,

as curve is to sphere,

as knot is to net,

as one is to many,

as coin is to money,

as bird is to flock,

as rock is to mountain,

as drop is to fountain,

as spring is to river,

as glint is to glitter,

as near is to far,

as wind is to weather,

as feather is to flight,

as light is to star,

as kindness is to good,

so acorn is to wood.

61 Highway by Mississippi Fred McDowell - "I've also been doing a bit of radio catch-up this week and listened to editions of Desert Island Discs which featured Robert Plant, Kate Atkinson and one from August which featured Shirley Collins. This was one track she chose, as she had accompanied Alan Lomax on his trip when he recorded McDowell, this being one of the first songs he performed for him. Shirley said that Lomax wrote down in his note book, "Perfect", next to the entry for the song. Says it all."

Trip to Portugal / Guiseppes by Damien O'Kane - "Damien's tune Trip To Portugal has lodged itself in the ol' brain cells at the moment.....and in trying to figure out the tricky 'B part', I came across this clip of his band which I hadn't seen before. We've just got tickets for Damien O'Kane and Ron Block, the 5 string banjo master with Alison Krauss and Union Station, at Selby Town Hall in October....the ultimate banjo gig! Can't wait.
