Week 19 - Fri 12th May

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 12th May 2023...and another fine musical mixture coming your way. And if something catches your ear and you find you are missing it from your collection, then if you are within striking distance of Holt, Norfolk, head on over to the record fair next Saturday. You'll probably bump into some other RPMers as well. In the mean time, over to....

"Greetings from Son Bou, Menorca where we almost got caught out in the open today when a violent thunderstorm came out of nowhere. Luckily saved by a kind Menorcan who gave us a lift as the lightening flashed overhead and the heavens opened up.  Here's 3 I prepared before I left. Flying back on Sunday - best to you all."

Wildwood by Paul Weller - "One of my favourites from him."

"Even though a lot of people are not interested in the Monarchy I hope they watched the coverage of the Coronation. It shows the UK can still pull together and put on ceremony, parades and celebrations  like no other nation. The actual Coronation was a part of our history after all and was pared down to the ceremony that Queen Elizabeth endured. I thought that the music was exceptional and so I’ve chosen some for this week’s RPM."

"Have a good week everyone. I’m off to  see Joe Bonamassa on Wednesday. Rousing Rock Blues – wonderful!"

"I have been getting up to my old tricks again, watching silent movies. This is one that I didn’t know until this week when I dug it out while looking for the film ‘Moines et Guerriers’ starring  Émilie Marie Bouchaud  (known as ‘La Polaire’ - ‘The Northern Star’)

I found a clip which included some footage from 1915’s ‘Les Vampires’  another film well worth a look too. but… my big find, this clip, came up in the YouTube side panel. It is well worth watching the whole of this Danish silent  ‘Afgrunden’ (The Abyss) which was made in 1909 -1910. It stars  Asta Nielsen who is dancing in this short clip.  (perhaps that should read 'getting a wriggle on')  It could be described as an early Scandi Noire as the only colour is black and in addition, it does come from Scandinavia! If you do take a look at the rest of the film, it has Love, abandonment and murder plus one of the best cowboy hats that you are ever likely to see anywhere!"

"In this short clip do note the geezer with the trombone!"

"This is just something that I found the same way and which surprised me whilst finding a track for last week's submission... I had no idea!"

"And an old Monroe Brothers song so ably revived by Gillian Welch which I plan to incorporate into my repertoire soon... (at the Wolf Club tonight maybe!)."

"Been playing a lot of 7" beesides recently and here's three of 'em."

Johnny Kidd and the Pirates- 'Dr Feelgood (b-side to 'Always and ever' released 6th March 1964. HMV label)

"There's more about Kidd in Week 29/2022 and in my 'Can blue men sing the whites Vol 1' article. This was lead guitarist Mick Green's final outing with Kidd and it's Green's style of playing, of course, that influenced Wilko Johnson of the appropriately monickered Dr Feelgood."

B. B. King- 'Please send me someone to love' (b-side to 'Dance with me' US only released 1966. Bluesway label. Initially on 'Confessin' the Blues' LP released 1965. ABC/Paramount label)

"Here's the venerable B. B. whose given name was actually Riley B. King. He was nicknamed 'Beale Street Blues Boy' and later 'Blues Boy' whilst working as a singer and DJ at Memphis radio station WDIA in the late 1940's. This excellent jazzy/jump blues number was first recorded by Percy Matfield and hit number one in the Billboard chart in 1950. There's a distinct 'Ray Charles' vibe on this recording, a direction ABC/Paramount were urging B B to travel around this time, and here he's supported by his then current road band including Duke Jethro (piano), Leo Lauchie (bass), and Sonny Freeman (drums) and, on this track, a totally different brass section to that employed elsewhere. The album was only partially satisfactory thanks to the recurring over-reliance of the less sympathetic brass section but the album contains definitive versions of 'I'm gonna move to the outskirts of town' and 'How Long, How Long Blues' plus excellent interpretations of Big Joe Turner's 'Cherry Red' and 'Wee Baby Blues' to outweigh the occasional clinker. One interesting point; I once saw an interview between King and Clapton where Clapton complimented King on his guitar playing and said what an influence it had been on his own style. To which King retorted that he marvelled at how Clapton could sing and play guitar at the same time, an art which King had been unable to master in over 40 years of playing the instrument!!"

Sex Pistols- 'I wanna be me' (b-side to 'Anarchy in the UK released 26th November 1976. EMI label.)

Cancelled due to:

Os Mutantes- 'Bat Macumba' (this from 'World Psychedelic Classics Vol.1: Everything Is Possible - the Best of .....' CD released 28 June 1999. Luaka Bop label.)

"Another demise this week, and this time it's Rita Lee from Brazil's finest 'tropicalismo' band. Further information regarding Os Mutantes is on Week7/2020 and here's their most famous track from a pretty good collection of their work which is still available from various online outlets."

"Greetings from Swanton Morley. Back from a short break visiting family in Derbyshire, where I was obliged to take part in a street party celebrating the continuance of feudalism.

This week I have been carefully avoiding anything to do with Eurovision, and will carry on doing so on Saturday evening. Jacquie will be attending a Eurovision party, but I will be perfectly content watching an old movie, listening to non-robotic genuinely human music, and reading Lucinda Williams' excellent and beautifully written memoir, 'Don't Tell Anybody The Secrets I told You'.

So let's start with Lucinda."

Can't Let Go by Lucinda Williams - "From her short-lived dark-haired period (late '98?) and featuring Jim Lauderdale on backing vocals."

Sunday Morning Coming Down by Kris Kristofferson - "...from his first (1970) album. Poetry. Dedicated to certain people of my acquaintance who seem to live from one alcoholic drink to the next, with thanks for the fact that I've never felt the need to live like that. The accompanying video seems to be drawn from various sources possibly including Mr. K's turn as Jim Averill in "Heaven's Gate."

Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby by Taj Mahal - "Another of those 80 year-olds still doing the biz. His new album, "Savoy," is a celebration of the music he heard at home as a child."

"Best wishes."

"Whew....think we need something calming after that..."

Shape #5 by Sam Sweeney with Louis Campbell - " 'Shapes' is a new and beautiful album just out from Sam Sweeney which sees the fiddle maestro using old "folk" manuscripts as the springboard to come up with his own new interpretations. Sublime."

The Damage of Life performed by Hawkwind - "Originally from the Dave Brock and the Agents of Chaos album which found Dave taking a rest from piloting the starship Hawkwind, here's a favourite track from that second solo outing released in 1988, a song which was subsequently merged into the Hawkwind live set on and off, which is what we have here from the 2001 Yule Ritual live album."
