Week 6 - Fri 9th Feb

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 9th February 2023. Here's this weeks musical morsels from the collective's smorgasbord of sound...over to...

David -

"A happy Sweet Gene Vincent greeting to all RPM folks on what would have been his 89th birthday next week and thanks for last week's sweet music.

The end point of my road trip this week was a visit to Amersfoort to take some friends to Piet Mondrian's Museum. The final exhibit in the museum is a rather beautiful video installation centred around PM's last years in New York.

Here are 3 tracks that are sampled in the video."

Sonata for flute, viola and harp 2 Interlude by Claude Debussy -

"Finally I'd like to ask Tim for a bonus track /video please, from the man who put the soundtrack to the video installation."

(...go on then, Tim.)

"That's All Folks."

"Here’s a very mixed bag of music this week..."

Chita Rivera performs "America" and "All That Jazz" - "Fantastic singer, dancer and actress whose career and talent stretched for many decades."

Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas - "Heard this on Sounds of the Seventies this week. Thought the harmonies were very Eagles-like."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5ZJui3aPoQ

Tumbling Dice by The Rolling Stones with Bruce Springsteen (live at Prudential Center, Newark 2012) - "Watched the whole Grrr concert on Sky Arts recently. How can Mick be so skinny and have that much energy? Except for about 10mins he was strutting on stage for nearly 3 hours. Says something for good music and just wanting to move around to it. Keeps you fit in body and mind."

"Well done all RPMers you keep sending lots of up-lifting music."

Tony -

Evolution by Sheryl Crow - "Title track from Sheryl's new album - will be buying this I think. Apt words for these very troubling times."

Ain't Nothing You Can Do Bobby (Blue) Bland - "Heard this on the radio when having to spend 72 hours flat on my back - Ain't nothing you can do!

The Blue Cafe by Chris Rea - "Seen many times and he never disappointed. One of my late wife's favourite acts."

Jayne -

"Best wishes RPMers. I’m leaving the Transatlantic Session performance that we went to on Wednesday night to influence P’s selection, I’ll stick with the soundtrack in the car as we drove home through heavy snow."

Winterbound by The Wilderness Yet -

Kevin -

"Three for one this week. What is the point of covering another person's song, unless to create something very new and refreshing from old material?  Covers should be imaginative re-interpretations, not slavish facsimiles. Discuss!"

Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg - "The Ur text."

Gin and Juice performed by The Gourds - "Apparently there's a subgenre called 'gangstagrass'."

"Jayne and I spent a couple of days in Derbyshire, this week. The main reason for our trip was to catch the Transatlantic session at The Opera House in Buxton on Wednesday evening. But we also took in Arbor Low which is a prehistoric complex including a double (two story)  barrow,  an avenue and a ruinous banked and ditched Neolithic henge. Just as mysterious as such spots should be, it stands up on a peak overlooking one of the most beautiful scenic landscapes in a county full of wondrous views.

To reflect those elements I have selected some melodic tracks (all suitably jolly cosmic if you ask me!) by people who played on the stage before us, as we sat up in the gods… (I felt just like Honour Blackman looking down from Mount Olympus in Jason and The Argonauts). The trip was nicely rounded off by the sight of the ornamental potted palms decorated by thick snowfall as we left the Hotel in a blizzard on Thursday morning."

Dà Làimh sa Phìob by Kim Carnie with her band Staran -

I Would Not Live Always by Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f1M2owWaPI

"And to conclude, I couldn’t miss the chance of playing a track which features three of the artists from the show, and includes one outstanding talent that some of us were lucky enough to experience close up at Elsing Village Hall (thanks to Tim)." ("Piers means John Doyle...and it was an absolute pleasure to put on those gigs. Tim")

Leaving Uist / Lochaber Badger performed by John Doyle, Michael McGoldrick & John McCusker -

"Maybe we should consider an RPM outing to one of 2025’s Transatlantic Sessions; a Sanders coach and a few crates of pale ale shouldn't be too difficult to organise? Til next time...."

Nina -

"Hi folks. Really enjoyed catching up with the last few weeks of RPM recently, a wonderfully varied selection of tunes and always things to learn.

In consideration of Kevin's point regarding which video to choose, I've included 2 versions of Zero by Yeah Yeah Yeahs this week - both live, but very different.  I'll be interested to know what you all think."

1. 2009 Reading Festival - "Poor sound quality lifted by a jubilant crowd..."

https://youtu.be/UvCmp45T2rg?feature=shared

2. 2022 Corona Capital, Mexico City - "Much better/enhanced sound - dare I say reverb? But an oddly static crowd.. Gotta wonder how many times Karen's sung that song over the intervening 14 years too."

https://youtu.be/gtToZX-AAS0?feature=shared

Dawn Chorus by Jon Hopkins - "A poignant track in memory of Andy Smith, an amazing kitesurfer, instructor and wonderfully kind man. He died on 7th February 2021 while kitesurfing at Walberswick, Suffolk.  Sadly missed, but always with us."

"Take care folks."

Philip -

"Last week a neighbour gave me a load of CDs (he's having a clear-out), so I have been going through them to decide which are "keepers."

This means I have been listening to a lot of stuff I haven't heard in a long time, including some things I never want to hear again.

There have been some items, however, that it has been a pleasure to be reacquainted with.

Three examples of the latter follow (and there may be more next week)."

Sylvia by Focus - "Pretty good for a bunch of Dutch hippies."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznS7X9BOxs

Wishing Well by Free - "Pretty good for a bunch of young British hippies."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLSAGnHNqGc

Marlene on the Wall by Suzanne Vega - "A slightly more recent vintage than the other two numbers, but pretty good for a wan New Yorker."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXb6Lb_h0Oo

"Best wishes to all RPMers."

Dave -

"Hi everyone, hope all is well with you. Here’s my 3."

"This week, after reading headlines each day with increasing incredulity (How can this be getting worse...?), I'm wishing there were no such things as religion, capitalism and despotism, as it's this triumvirate that seems to be the main cause of wars... and I'm feeling pretty despondent and powerless, tbh. So, after playing some old stuff and something new that's just a week old, I was glad to have music to act as a release valve (hope you feel a bit better as well after shouting along with choice number two) and succinctly sum up how we think...."

"....such as, will "pressing the button" really determine a victor....?

Who's Gonna Win The War by Hawkwind -

"...or, why don't the people of the world stand up and tell the warmongers where to go....and yes, there's going to be a lot of swearing..."

F-Bombs by Kula Shaker -
