Week 29 - Fri 21 July
Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 21st July 2023...a short but sweet edition this week, let's see what's been hitting your decks; over to...
Piers -
"A great new album from Elina Duni."
A Time To Remember by Elina Duni -
"And one that I have performed a couple of times this week. By the band that gave a young singing truck driver named Leonard Slye his first big break before he changed his name to Roy 'Dusty' Rogers!"
Cool Water by The Sons Of The Pioneers -
"And even though I realise that the obvious track to follow that with is Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service, here is something from the same era that I have loved for 54 years which I first thought silly. As time goes by it seems to me that it should be being played whenever folk get together to pick. Always fun to play."
Man In The Fog by The Flying Burrito Brothers -
Dave -
"Hi RPMers, here’s my 3 tunes for this week."
San Francisco by Bonny Doon -
I Inside The Old I Dying by PJ Harvey -
One Day by Kings Go Forth -
Jayne -
"Greetings RPMers, here are three songs that have crossed my earspace this week, all performed by local musicians."
The World Turned Upside Down performed by Billy Bragg -
Magpie performed by The Unthanks -
One In A Million performed by Chris Wood -
Philip -
"Three songs this week that are associated with Leadbelly."
Cotton Fields performed by The Beachboys -
Midnight Special performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival -
Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (AKA In The Pines) - "...performed by Nirvana. I think Kurt was wrong here... it was not a Leadbelly "original," but his adaptation of a folk song."
Bonus Track - "And, if I may be permitted, how about a bonus song? This one is about Leadbelly."
Starvation Box by Dale Watson -

"Best wishes to everyone."
John -
"Hi Everyone, I hope you're all keeping fit and well. Here's a sample of what I've been listening to this week..."
Plainsong by The Cure - "One of the best 'Side One, Track One' songs ever. From the album 'Disintegration'. (Acknowledgements to Tim's blurb from last week and that wonderful scene in High Fidelity...You know the one, if not, here's a reminder." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SQMl51RDIQ)
Work To Do by Larry Braggs & The T.O.P. Queens - "I know some RPM members are not fond of tribute bands but put your views aside for 4 minutes and 28 seconds and give this band a listen.... (Okay, so they've borrowed one of the singers from the band they're paying tribute to... but they are still amazing without Larry!)
Question: When Bruce Springsteen recorded and toured 'The Seeger Sessions' did he (temporarily) become a tribute act?
Hero And Heroine by Strawbs - "From the album of the same name released in 1974."
Tim -
"Riffling through some old CDs this week I came across a compilation one labeled 'Gig Music'. Hmmmm.....wonder what this is.......
Turns out to be a selection put together for one of the first gigs we - that's LongShoreDrift - did at Elsing village hall. This performance was back in October 2010 and also featured Axel Loughrey ("modern blues vibes") and one, Anto Morra ("Irish songster") as support. I found the poster to check. Here's some tracks...."
Mystery Train Pt2 by Steve Earle -
Venus In Furs by Velvet Underground -
The Otter's Set performed by Michael McGoldrick -
'Til Next Time....
