Week 13 - Fri 29 Mar

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 29th March 2024. It's freezing and raining...oh, it must be Easter. Here's how they arrived in the in box this week...over to...

Piers -

"Jayne and I have been hard at it this week and I have been listening to a lot of Radio 3 in the early mornings.  One of the best things I heard at about 6 AM was that tune that goes 'dum dum de dum, dum dum de de dum,  dum dum dipty dum,  dum dum dah...  That's the one, the Karelia Suite by Sibelius. In the olden days it was the Sig tune to the telly show 'This Week', a fine tune to wake up to.... but that just missed out and these are tracks that stand out above the rest of what I have heard 'This Week'."

"This one is from a player that we chanced to hear when Jayne and I attended the Iceland Airwaves Festival  a while ago."

Fantômas by Amiina -

"One from long ago and far away in the days when I thought Os Mutantes the grooviest thing in the world - then I heard this…. I thought it sounded pretty good even before I was told about the rhyming pattern to the highly politically critical  lyrics which Wikipedia says blend bossa nova, MPB, and symphonic musical styles with Afro-Brazilian rhythms to emphasize the 14 syllable verses, each of which ends in a proparoxytone word (a word with the stress on the antepenultimate syllable)."

Construção by Chico Buarque -

"And finally a band that, once upon a time, stood close by (in full regalia) and rehearsed their forthcoming performance as Jayne and I ate breakfast in a garden in Bracknell..."

Le Mystere des voix Bulgares -

Kevin -

"Hi guys. A bit low-key this week, as it happens."

Barstow by Jay Farrar - "Had this song going through my head this week. Found this song on a brilliant giveaway Americana compilation CD on Uncut magazine, alongside other gems."

Gawd Above by John Fullbright - "I know John Fullbright has been chosen here before but he seems to be generally less well-known than he deserves."

Carissa by Sun Kil Moon - "A true and very moving narrative. Losing two members of the family in the most bizarre of circumstances and on separate occasions."

Tony -

"Here are my 3 choices for the week with best wishes as always to my fellow RPMers."

Exactly Like You Aretha Franklin - "Heard on Boom Radio this week."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjzzEyHiwU8

Baby Grand Billy Joel and Ray Charles - "I've picked this track once before but it's worth another spin if only to show how two immaculate performers really FEEL the music they make for us."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUNOmN3YVL0

New Orleans Gary US Bonds - "Released here on the short-lived Top Rank Label - Gary charted over here with several songs in the early 60's. Glad you enjoyed your trip Jean!"

John -

"Happy Easter Everyone, Here are three tracks that have caught my ears this week."

Jean -

"Well, RPMers here's the second part of my New Orleans Music Fest. Went to Cafe Beignet for my first breakfast in New Orleans. Beignets are choux type pastries, deep fried and then smothered in icing sugar and added extras like chocolate and strawberries. They are huge and were 3 for $4.50. I failed miserably - only managed 1 and a bit!"

Anytime / Up A Lazy River / All of Me performed by Steamboat Willie - "Steamboat Willie is an institution here." ("Hmmm...seems to be a lot of  sneaked-in bonus tracks here" 😉 Tim.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUdZjZy3Rf4

Kinfolk Brass Band Street Parade - "Wish I had seen one of these street bands but there wasn't a big festival during my visit."

"Hope everyone has a peaceful Easter. Back to my normal eclectic mix next week."

Philip -

"I considered submitting more Sierra Ferrell this week, but decided perhaps I'd save that (my favourite song from her new album), for next week. Meanwhile, here are three numbers from new albums due in April.

BTW...following your much appreciated (and acted upon) recommendation of Kate Atkinson recently, might I enquire as to whether you've come across Tana French, especially her two most recent novels 'The Searcher' and 'The Hunter'. Highly recommended, great writer." (Nope, I haven't. I shall perambulate to the library forthwith. Thanks for the recommendation. Tim)

Killers of the Flower Moon by Charley Crockett - "I've not seen the film yet. I'm hoping it will become available in a format where I can have intermissions at whatever points I might require them."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQnw4i-t4qA

Hill Country Love by Cedric Burnside - "Co-produced by Luther Dickinson..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qXjg4r4CTM

Where The Road Goes by The Old 97s - "A band comparable perhaps to The Jayhawks. Lead singer Rhett Miller not to be confused with the only other Rhett I can think of, who was a character in a novel and film that waxed nostalgic for the loss of a way of life founded on a slave economy."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkA_hQfQdHs

"Best wishes to everyone."

David -

"A Bulgarian road trip this week and sadly not much live music to be had. Right place, wrong time seemed to be the theme or probably a distinct lack of research on my part. Anyway the food, wine, beer, museums, architecture, weather and especially the people more than compensated."

Here are 3 things I listened to. One new to me and two older. Happy Easter to all RPM folks everywhere."

Bulgarian Jazz Quartet with Blues in 10 -

That's All Folks.

Nina -

"Hi folks. Hope you're all well. What a cracking collection last week - Easter pun intended.

Hope you had an amazing time in New Orleans, Jean.

I've been ill most this week with a very nasty stomach bug - thanks for all the sewage dumps, south west water. Stayed dry, took it easy, read books + listened to music. Nikki Giovanni was on Cerys Matthews' R6 show so spoken word features in my choices..."

Let's Go Swimming by Arthur Russell -  "Yes please, in less polluted rivers + seas

No luck in England

Hours of sewage discharge - more than 4 million

129% increase on 2022

Up shit creek? Best take a canoe

Shower of political + privatised shit = public health + environmental disaster."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uenS3ax3NI0

Mandolin Concerto in C major, RV 425 (1st mvt) by Antonio Vivaldi - "Radio 3 is the best station to have on whilst wood working. This accompanied making drawer fronts for Ewan's revamped kitchen."

Henchmen Ride by Testament - "Some heavy metal chatter in the afternoon resulted in Testament's The Formation of Damnation album being given an airing.🤘"
