Week 3 - Fri 19th Jan

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 19th January 2023. Here's some hot sounds to thaw out your frozen lugholes...over to...

Tony -

"Here's my selection for the week. Could easily have picked 'Cold As Ice' by Foreigner after a chilly session clearing my windscreen this morning  but settled for these."

The Shape I'm In by The Band -

Stealin' Time by Gerry Rafferty - "I can't think of any track by Gerry that was average. This is from his 'City to City' album  - shame he succumbed to the drink."

I Can See Clearly Now Johnny Nash - "I've picked this before but.....

Hope this is prophetic - have an eye op on Tuesday so may be out of action selection-wise for a little while."

David -

"Hope all you folks are keeping warm and dry as the weather sets into what we have been expecting. I have been priming myself on music I'll be seeing over the weekend as I make my way up to Glasgow for Celtic Connections."

"Starting off with a Slovakian/Norwegian orchestra, here is..."

Angrusori with Chude Man-Vastetar -

"Keep well and warm this coming week everyone."

Nina -

"Hi folks. Hope all's good, here's my 3..."

Belfast by Orbital - "Some/many prefer the instrument version. I quite like the male vocal + lyrics. Don't like the ventriloquist dummy though...at all...it freaks me out."

Blind by Hercules & Love Affair - "C'mon, let's have a dance 🙂."

Alice (live) by Daisy Rickman - "Thanks to Jayne for including a track by local to me artist + musician Daisy Rickman (from Mousehole), her paintings are currently on display in Newlyn Fermentery. Here she is playing live in Brighton with her talented and wonderfully named band: Nina Winder-Lind - Cello, Willow Bumble - Bouzouki, Lau Zanin - 12 String Guitar, Freddie J Watts - Saxophone & Synth, Ozzy Moysey - Double Bass, Toma Sapir - Drums & Percussion."

"Take care all,

Cheers!"

(After last weeks RPM, impressed with the Blue Morning track, I messaged Nina (now in Cornwall) to ask if she knew of Daisy Rickman, which she did...the great thing about RPM is discovering new music, so thanks Jayne for bringing Daisy to our attention...and thanks Nina for choosing Alice. I was going to include the album version in my selections this week, so now I can have something else because you've got it covered😁. Daisy's new album Howl (Cornish for sun, apparently) will be released on the spring equinox, 20th March 2024. Tim.)

Philip -

"As with last week's selection I was inspired to listen to my first two submissions for this week by their inclusion in the excellent TV drama "Truelove." If you've not seen it, I think it's worthy of your time. The third earworm worked it's way into my head via an advert- Vision Express, if I recall correctly."

"I have been catching up with a few slidey things this week…"

"First up an old friend. One of the kindest and most talented players I have ever met. The man who convinced me to begin to learn a few lap steel techniques  on a Weissenborn. Of course,  I never got anywhere like this..."

"Hello RPMers, here are three tracks I've enjoyed this week."

"My three aural experiences to share this week are..."

Auprès de ma blonde performed by Olivia Chaney - "Such clarity of voice..."

Bobby Reid by Lucette - "Heard an excellent version played on banjo at a session..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq5Ywwfqbu0

Kevin -

"Hi everybody! Cold enough for you? Perhaps these tracks will warm you up..."

Decatur, or, Round of Applause for your Step-Mother! by Sufjan Stevens - "There are several tracks on this amusingly entitled album I'd like to share in the course of time, but this is a good one to start with. He once joked, after the release of his album, Michigan, and this one, that he planned to create an album for all 50 of the United States. Still 48 to go..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=694Ok4_8kCg&ab_channel=SufjanStevens-Topic

Dog Gone by Frank Black & The Catholics "One of the many gems on Black Francis' first solo album after the Pixies' break-up. Why give himself a stage name when Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV is  your given name!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucBVVq_ztDM&ab_channel=AdamBuxton

Viaticum by the Esbjörn Svennson Trio - "We were fortunate to see this endlessly inventive trio a couple of times, most notably at the superb Sage concert hall in Gateshead. The two shows were completely different, except in the quality of playing. 'Tragedy' is too often applied to commonplace deaths, but in his case - he died in a scuba diving accident accompanied by an instructor and his teenage son - it really was tragic. Just 44 years old. As with so many other talented musicians dying prematurely, you can only wonder what wonders they had in them yet to come."

"Three tunes from new stuff, this week..."

Ilion by Slift - "I couldn't believe my eyes....a new recording from Toulouse based space rockers, Slift...and 4 live UK dates, one of which is The Brudenell Club in Leeds at the end of February. We shall be shifting these temporal life forms in the land speeder as fast as it's repulsorlift engine will get us there! In the mean time, here's the new masters of the universe, live, performing the title track from the new album..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNUTVzkRm8M

Waves by Kula Shaker - "Whew! Think we need to calm down a bit after that last one... so, some more "feel good" pop psychedelia from our lad's forthcoming album."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4dYLWsCc94

Run Into The Shadows by Magnum - "Here, as intimated last week, is a song from the new Magnum album, Here Comes The Rain. First impressions after playing it a few times each day this week; it's not another Storyteller's Night or Lost On The Road To Eternity, but certainly a very solid performance with everything a Magnum fan would expect, thus proving to be a very enjoyable listen."
