Week 7 - Friday 16th Feb

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 16th February 2024. What's been on RPMer's sound systems this week? Over to...

Dave -

"Hi RPMers, here's my 3 this week."

I'm a Gypsy Man by J.J. Cale -

Kevin -

"More wonderful selections from you people last week - thank you! Here are my three... And Piers, I'd be up for that charabanc ride to the Transatlantic Sessions next year."

Roscoe by Midlake -  " 'Whenever I was a child I wondered what if my name had changed into something more productive like Roscoe. Been born in 1891, waiting with my aunt Rosaline', fab melody, harmonies and lyrics. Saw them in Gateshead in the 00s. They're still around in different guises; currently collaborating with John Grant."

The Jukebox As She Turned by Nic Jones - "What can I say about Nic Jones that will have already been said on this forum. Nothing. Except perhaps that I quite like the CD cover cartoon from Norfolk's own dear Tony Hall."

Lonesome Whistle by Little Feat - "I notice that Little Feat make regular appearances on these playlists - deservedly, of course - so I've avoided some of their classics (over familiar but always welcome) and been playing this one. I was blessed to see them at the Hammersmith Odeon in '76 (think I might have said that before), when still in their prime. No other band has come near to their perfect blend of lyric, style, rhythm and melody. Here they cover a Hank Williams classic and completely own it."

"In about 1971, some friends and I were regularly hiring bands and putting them on. Unlike most pubs and the local dance hall, as long as we cleared up after ourselves and there was no damage, we didn’t have to pay to hire the local Technical College Student Union Hall, so that was our preferred venue...but it wasn’t always available.

One week we had a deal with a promoter and found ourselves with a pared down version of Ian Carr’s Nucleus (with a rather good guitarist that I found out much later was Chris Spedding). I was a bit dubious about them as ‘people don’t like jazz’. The audience was not huge but they just about paid for themselves but left us slightly short to paying for the venue. The following week, as the SU hall was available at the Tech, almost against my better judgement, I went out on a limb with the same promotor. He talked me into ‘a great deal’ with a hot new band (the same man told us that  Chicory Tip sounded like Crosby Stills and Nash!).

He promised that a track from Patto’s album would be played on a Keith Skues record review radio show (it wasn’t) and so I was instrumental in booking the band.  I hadn’t seen them live before but their promo record sounded OK and as it was a double bill I took a punt and fronted a whole week’s wages to hire them. I paid the agency £25 for Patto and a support band… (well it was a weekend). Luckily the gig made a small profit and by Sunday morning I had an extra fiver in my pocket! I really liked Patto in no small part due to being hugely impressed by Olly Halsall who was at that time one of those great guitarist that nobody had heard of but should have! He went on to be a Rutle so he must have been well thought of by others too! (He did do other stuff too to be honest) His flamboyant style was always interesting."

"There was always a jazz tinge to his playing, but he had that rock vibe…  (and some)."

Paperback Writer performed by Tempest -
