Deze sympele stanza is, naar men zegt, bedacht door Petrarca. Hij is zowel bouwsteen voor het Italiaanse octaaf, als voor de Franse en Spaanse vorm daarvan. Zelfstandig is hij echter ook goed te gebruiken. In Frankrijk en Spanje werd de vorm opgebouwd uit 8 syllaben, in Frankrijk overheerste de jambische tetrameter.
