Pair of Nanooks best competition at Junior Olympics rifle championships

FAIRBANKS — A pair of Alaska Nanooks won the air rifle competition Saturday on the first day of the Alaska Junior Olympics State Championships at the Patty Center.

Freshman Lorelie Stanfield, a Lathrop High graduate, won the women’s event, while sophomore Ryan Anderson, of Great Falls, Va., captured the men’s title.

Stanfield posted a 385 out of 400 in claiming the women’s crown. Second place went to Cathryn Papasodora, of Anchorage, with a 382 and Lathrop junior Kasey Barnes earned the bronze medal with a personal best score of 381.

Other personal best scores posted Saturday were by Elizabeth Rowe, of Valdez, with a 356, Ashlyn Mahoney, of Valdez, with a 351 and Erin Brayfield, of Anchorage, with a 332.

On the men’s side, Anderson posted the winning score of 581 out of 600. Second place went to Reniel Aljibe, of Anchorage, with a 569 and third place went to Lathrop’s Connor Gilman with a 565.

Hutchison High School’s Blaze Brooks also had a personal best 565, but Gilman won the tie-breaker — most center 10s.

Other personal best scores were posted by Lathrop’s JT Schnering with a 564; Mitchel Yrjana, of Valdez, with a 523; and Lathrop’s Garret Snyder a 521.

The match concludes at 10 a.m. today at the Patty Center. An awards ceremony will be held about 4:15 p.m.
