Masters, Martin grab gold medals in Junior Olympic rifle events

FAIRBANKS — Forest Masters of Valdez posted a pair of resident qualifying scores and earned two gold medals in the women’s events to highlight performances in the 2011 Alaska Junior Olympic Rifle Championships held Saturday and Sunday at the E.F. Horton Range at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Masters registered a 384 out of 400 in the air rifle event to earn the gold medal on Saturday, then came back and notched a 576 out of 600 to earn another gold in smallbore.

Anchorage’s Alexandrea Lorentz took second in the air rifle competition with a 281 and Emily Williams of West Valley was third with 378.

Amber Poston of Anchorage earned the silver medal in smallbore with a 438 and Anna Quist of West Valley registered a personal best 519 to take the bronze. Jamie Barnes of Lathrop notched a personal best 516 to finish in fourth place.

Members of the Alaska Nanooks rifle team dominated the men’s competition, but medals are awarded only to non-collegiate athletes.

Anchorage’s Matthew Martin won the gold medal in both events.

Martin won the air rifle gold with a 572. West Valley’s Bert Williams took home the silver with a 558 and Michael Lindemann was third with a 554.

Nanooks Cole Bures and Ryan Dunham-Bender led the field with scores of 588. Mike Liuzza put up a 576 and Donnie Hannon notched a 567.

Corey Upton of Hutchison had a personal best of 550.

Martin earned the gold medal in the air rifle event with a 555, finishing fifth overall behind four Nanooks.

West Valley’s Bert Williams and Cale MacDonald earned the silver and bronze medals with scores of 554 and 546, respectively.

It was a personal best score for Bert Williams. Other personal best performances went to Upton with a 528 and Hutchison’s Max Delzer with a 488.

Bures had the top score of the day with a 584, followed by teammates Liuzza with a 580, Hannon with a 562 and Dunham-Bender with a 557.
