Ex-Nanooks shooter Ryan Anderson second at Olympic Trials

FAIRBANKS—Former Alaska Nanooks shooter Ryan Anderson sits in second place after the second day of the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships.

The competition, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, also is serving as the Olympic Trials for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Anderson fired a 621.1 on Saturday to give him a two-day total of 1,255.2, just 1.1 points out of first place. Anderson sat in fifth place after Friday’s round, when he shot a 620.1.

Anderson won the individual final on Saturday, beating Garrett Spurgeon by less than a point. Spurgeon leads all men shooters with a two-day score of 1,256.3.

Current Nanooks senior Tim Sherry moved up to 16th after shooting a 618.2 on Saturday. Sherry sat in 25th after shooting a 614.3 on Friday, giving him a two-day total of 1,231.5.

Matt Rawlings, another former Nanook, is in 18th with a two-day score of 1,239.6. Rawlings shot a 617.7. on Saturday and fired a 619.9 on Friday.

Former Nanook Mike Liuzza fired a 616.9 on Saturday for a two-day score of 1,234.1, good for 21st. Liuzza shot a 617.2 on Friday.

In the women’s competition, Nanooks redshirt sophomore Sagen Maddalena is in 20th after two days of shooting. She shot a 413.9 on Friday and a 411.8 on Saturday for a total score of 827.7.
