Lathrop nabs rifle win

FAIRBANKS — The Lathrop Malemutes put up some big smallbore numbers Saturday in posting a high school rifle sweep of the Delta Junction Huskies.

Three Lathrop shooters posted personal best scores as the Malemutes won the smallbore event 2,034-1,870. Lathrop captured the air rifle portion of the match 2,196-2,055.

JT Schnering led the Malemutes’ smallbore team with a personal best 525. Kasey Barnes notched a 519, while Joshua Smith and Liam Eberhart notched personal best scores of 505 and 485, respectively.

Alex Mathews led Delta Junction’s smalbore unit with a 510. Dillon Tatro checked in with a 482, Rachael Hannan notched a 445 and Jakob Shaeat put up a 433.

While there were not personal bests in the air rifle portion of the match, all of Lathrop’s shooters posted scores of 539 or better.

Barnes led the way with a 557, Schnering and Erik Kirschner each shot 550 and Connor Gilman came in with a 539.

Shaeat was the top shooter for Delta Junction with a 540, while Tatro had a 530, Hannan posted a 503 and Mathews finished with a 482.

Next up on the high school rifle schedule is a smallbore match between Hutchison and West Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Range.
