FAIRBANKS — The Alaska Nanooks opened the collegiate rifle season with a victory against the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb., but coach Dan Jordan wasn’t overly pleased with his team’s performance.

“There’s at least another 60 points to be had out there,” Jordan said Saturday evening after the Nanooks posted a 4,622-4,599 victory.

“It seemed like they were shooting like they were worried or afraid not to screw up,” Jordan said. “They need to shoot for themselves and not worry about what others are thinking.”

Jordan said the Nanooks have been posting scores of 4,660 and 4,670 in practice matches.

“If they do what they are capable of, they can easily pick up 50 or 60 points,” Jordan said. “I just want them to shoot for themselves and improve tomorrow.”

The Nanooks complete their season-opening road trip with a match against Nebraska this morning.

Alaska won the smallbore portion of Saturday’s season-opener 2,296-2,278.

Freshman Tim Sherry of Highlands Ranch, Colo., led the Nanooks with a 582 out of a possible 600.

“He had a decent score,” Jordan said.

Sophomore Ryan Anderson posted a 574, followed by junior Mike Liuzza with a 574, senior Cole Bures with a 569 and sophomore Mats Eriksson with a 565.

Freshman Soren Butler of Casselton, N.D., posted a non-scoring 573.

The Nanooks won the air rifle portion of the match 2,326-2,321.

Bures posted the top score for the Nanooks with a 585. Anderson registered a 582 and Sherry posted a 580. Eriksson notched a 579 and Butler came in at 575. Liuzza shot a non-scoring 583.

North Carolina State’s Maddy Pike had the top air rifle score of the day with a 586.

After the Nanooks shoot today, they will return home for their home opener on Nov. 3 against the University of Texas El Paso.
