No. 2 Nanooks repeat as rifle champs

FAIRBANKS — For the second straight year, the Alaska Nanooks are champions of the Patriot Rifle Conference.

The No. 2 Nanooks shot a 2,355 in air rifle on Sunday to claim the conference championship with a two-day scored a 4,680 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.

The Nanooks shot a 2,325 to win the smallbore event on Saturday.

Senior Ryan Anderson and junior Lorelie Stanfield each led the Nanooks to a second place showing in air rifle by shooting a team-high 593. The host Air Force Falcons won the air rifle event after firing a 2,356.

Redshirt freshman Sagen Maddalena fired a 591 while junior Tim Sherry, who won Saturday’s individual smallbore title, shot a 588. Senior Mats Eriksson (582) and freshman Luke Johnson (583) rounded out the Nanooks team score.

Anderson, the defending conference individual air rifle champion, finished third in the individual event on Sunday. Maddalena finished seven in the individual event, just ahead of Stanfield in eighth.

Texas Christian University took second overall with a two-day score of 4,665. Ohio State, which was in second after smallbore on Saturday, finished third with a score of 4,655.

Air Force finished fourth at 4,647 while Nevada took fifth with a score of 4,596. Texas-El Paso rounded out the standings with a 4,558.

The Nanooks now return to Fairbanks where they’ll host a NCAA qualifiing match at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range on Feb. 21. The Nanooks host the NCAA Championships on March 13-14 at the Patty Center.
