Malemutes, Hawks split rifle match

FAIRBANKS — The Lathrop Malemutes and Hutchison Hawks split a Mid Alaska Conference high school rifle match Tuesday at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Range.

The Malemutes won the air rifle portion of the meet 2,202-2,157, while the Hawks captured the smallbore event 2,093-2,050.

If the scores had been added together, Lathrop would have finished with a 4,252 and Hutchison would have posted a 4,250 — almost as even as you can get.

Kasey Barnes set the pace for Lathrop’s air rifle victory with a 566 out of a possible 600. Erik Kirschner registered a personal best 551, while JT Schnering notched a 543 and Connor Gilman posted a 542.

All four of Hutchison’s shooters posted solid performances, led by Gabe Stutz with a 550. Nathaniel Manning notched a 544, Roscoe Beadles posted a 541 and Blaze Brooks registered a 532.

Manning notched a personal best 534 to lead the Hawks to victory in the smallbore portion of the match. Beadles registered a 531, Stutz put up a 419 and Max Delzer chipped in a 509.

Barnes’ personal best 552 was the top score for Lathrop, followed by Schnering with a personal best 520, Gilman with a 508 and Kirschner with a 470.

Several non-varsity shooter from each school also posted personal best scores.

Hutchison’s air rifle personal bests went to Loden Dunham (539), Amy Gentry (530), Emma Daniels (470), Garret Snyder (484) and Kimballan Carver (441). On the smallbore side, other Hawks notching their best scores were Gentry with a 454, Daniels with a 463 and Snyder with a 443.

Spencer Cline had a personal best 437 in air rifle for Lathrop. Three Malemutes had personal best smallbore scores — Joshua Smith with a 499, Cline with a 445 and Christian Brower with a 308.

The next prep rifle match features Delta Junction against North Pole at

8 a.m. Saturday at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Range.
