Hutchison tops West Valley in prep rifle matches

FAIRBANKS—The Hutchison Hawks defeated the West Valley Wolfpack in a pair of high school air rifle matches shot during the past week.

The Hawks posted a 2,165-2,080 win on Oct. 19, then came back to claim a 2,182, 2,127 decision on Oct. 23.

Usually the air rifle portions of high school matches are shot independently during practice the week prior to the smallbore portion of the match when teams shoot a face-to-face match.

This year, West Valley and Hutchison decided to shoot their air rifle events in a face-to-face manner as well.

In the Oct. 19 match, Hutchison was led by Gabe Stutz’s 554 and a personal best of 553 by Roscoe Beadles. Blaze Brooks came in with a 535 and Loden Dunham finished with a 523 to round out the team.

West Valley’s Nicole Plummer had a match-high 560 for West Valley, followed by a personal best 525 for Phillip Wilson a 509 by Matt East and a 486 by Connor Soden.

Several personal bests were shot by junior varsity and alternate shooters, including Hutchison’s Garret Snyder (494), Emma Daniels (505), Andrew Schok (409) and Noah Hughes (454) and West Valley’s Keith Abel (483).

Hutchison won the junior varsity match 2,020-1,856.

On Oct. 23, Stutz posted a 553 to pace the Hawks’ win. Brooks had a 545, Beadles a 543 and Nathanael Manning notched a 541.

Plummer had the match high, once again with a 557 for the Wolfpack. Wilson notched a 541, Connor Soden tallied a 528 and Casey McCheynne rounded out the team with a 501.

Personal best scores were posted by Hutchison’s Dunham (550) in the junior varsity match and Hutchison’s Hughes (488) as an alternate.

Hutchison won the junior varsity match 2,069-1,922.
