Volunteer Opportunities



STC NY Metro is a diverse, dynamic, and innovative community. There are so many opportunities to make new friends, build your confidence, gain valuable experience, master new skills, share your expertise, and simply have fun! We seek experienced professional and student volunteers to assist in all of the following areas.

Website Design

The STC NY Metro chapter seeks volunteers to oversee the redesign of the STC NY Metro chapter website and support ongoing implementation. Demonstrated expertise with website design and development recommended. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Membership & Community Development

The STC NY Metro chapter seeks volunteers to support new membership outreach and satellite community development in Long Island, Westchester, Hudson Valley, Northern New Jersey, and western Connecticut. Time and ability to host in-person networking events, call lapsed members and utilize LinkedIn and social media to raise awareness, proactively reach out, and develop membership campaigns is recommended. Prior knowledge/expertise with list management and direct marketing coupled with the use of ConstantContact, LinkedIn Premium, Sales Navigator and other tools is recommended, but not required. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Programs & Events

The STC NY Metro chapter seeks volunteers to support the activities, workshops, and events focused on engaging current and new members. Audience analysis skills are required. Knowledge of the trends in tech comm, including instructional design, content strategy, information architecture, data visualization, usability, user experience, technical illustration, and software-as-a-service is recommended. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Competitions

One of the most visible and successful activities of STC NY Metro Chapter is the STC Regional Tech Comm Competition. Currently in its 10th year, STC NY Metro leads a multi-chapter effort including Atlanta, Houston, New England, NY Metro, Philadelphia, Rochester, and Washington DC-Baltimore to determine the best and brightest in Tech Comm today. Sponsorship & Partnership

The STC NY Metro chapter seeks volunteers to support the sponsorship and joint partnership of programs and events. Prior event marketing experience in conferences and events recommended. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Instructional Design & Learning

In partnership with the STC Instructional Design & Learning Special Interest Group of the Society of Technical Communication, STC NY Metro seeks volunteers who have an interest in instructional theory, research, and tools and the intersection of technical communication and instructional design, especially in the following areas: Training development and delivery. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Content Strategy & Structured Authoring

STC NY Metro seeks volunteers to develop activities, programs, and events for members with expertise and interest in content strategy, structured authoring, and information architecture. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Data Visualization, Infographics & Analytics

STC NY Metro seeks co-chairs and volunteers to develop activities, programs, and events for members with expertise and interest in data visualization, infographics, and analytics. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

User Experience and IoT

STC NY Metro seeks co-chairs and volunteers co-chairs and volunteers to develop activities, programs, and events for members with expertise and interest in user experience, Internet of Things solutions. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Software-as-a-Service

STC NY Metro seeks co-chairs and volunteers co-chairs and volunteers to develop activities, programs, and events for members with expertise and interest in APIs. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Academic Special Interest Group

In conjunction with the Academic Special Interest Group of the Society of Technical Communication, STC NY Metro seeks co-chairs and volunteers with academic credentials to encourage local community participation in student outreach and involvement in student competitions focused on technical writing, data visualization, and internships. STC membership is a big plus, but not required.

Coaching and Mentoring Program

STC NY Metro seeks experienced tech comm pros and practitioners who aspire to share their time and talent coaching and mentoring less experienced professionals. STC membership is a big plus, but not required. If you would like to play a role in developing this program, we want to hear from you.
