Crimson Gold

This apple is a cross between two heirloom varieties, Yellow Nation and Esopus Spitzenburg. It was released in 1944 and was originally named Little Rosybloom. It somehow became mislabeled and was grown as Wickson. In the late 1970s, a single limb on a multi-grafted tree was identified as Crimson Gold, and the variety was saved from near-extinction. The apple is almost solid red, with tones of ruby and blush, a hint of yellow around the stem, and crisp, cream-colored flesh.
